September 21, 2007 | Sprint Football
PRINCETON -- Alex Kandabarow ran for two touchdowns and three another as the Princeton sprint football team dropped its season opener 49-26 to Cornell on Friday night at Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
The Tigers fell behind the Big Red early as Cornell, the defending Collegiate Sprint Football League champion, scored the game's first two touchdowns. The first came on Glenn Palmer's 44-yard touchdown run and the second coming on a one-yeard run by Matt Malleo.
Princeton cut the lead to 14-6 with a touchdown late in the first quarter. The Tigers put together a nine-play 60-yard drive that was capped by Kandabarow barreling his way into the endzone on a nine-yard run. Kandabarow had three completions on the drive for 13 or more yards, including a 19-yard pass to Henry Williams.
Elliott Corey's three-yard touchdown pass gave Cornell a 21-6 lead 31 seconds into the second quarter, but the Tigers got on the board minutes later when a Kandabarow punt pinned Cornell deep in its own territory. On the second down, Cornell fumbled the snap and Adrian Colarusso recovered the ball in the endzone for Princeton's second touchdown.
Malleo and Michael Brennan then added touchdowns for Cornell and the game went to the half with the Bid Red leading 35-12.
The teams traded touchdowns in the second half with each team scoring 14 points. Upal Sarker caught a 12-yard pass for a touchdown for Cornell in the third quarter to make the score 42-12 and Kenechuk Erike scored Cornell's final touchdown.
Princeton's two fourth quarter scores centered around Kandabarow. He scored on a quarterback sneak to cap a 39-yard drive and then connected for a 75-yard touchdown pass with Lon Johnson for the final touchdown. Johnson also caught the two-point conversion pass on the play.
Kandabarow threw for 270 yards in the game and was 19 for 59. His long was the 75-yard touchdown pass to Johnson. Johnson finished the night with 140 receiving yards on seven receptions. He totaled 265 all-purpose yards in the game. Defensively, Mike Schoder led the team with 11 tackles. Colarusso forced two fumbles in the game and Kandabarow caught an interception that he returned for 31 yards.
Princeton's 26-point output was its highest since a 28-point game at Penn to close the 2004 season.
Princeton returns to action next Friday night at Penn at 7 p.m.
