Tigers, Monmouth Play To Scoreless Tie In Men's Soccer
September 27, 2007 | Men's Soccer
A Princeton men's soccer team that started six freshmen outshot Monmouth 18-8, including 6-2 in overtime, but walked away with a scoreless tie against the Hawks at Powers Field after Monmouth goalie Dan Schenkel saved a final scoring chance from Ben Harms in the last three minutes of extra time.
Harms rocketed a shot from the left wing in the 107th minute of play, but Schenkel dove to his left to make one of his eight saves. Devin Muntz's rebound attempt was blocked and the Tigers (0-6-1) would not get a chance to score again.
The Tigers had four shots in the second overtime, including a Kyle McHugh redirection in front in the 104th minute that went wide right and another left-footed shot from Teddy Schneider 30 seconds later that was stopped by Schenkel near the near post. Princeton also had two shots in the first 10-minute overtime.
"It's the second game in a row we've doubled the shots of a good team, and that's an encouraging sign for us even though it's frustrating not to win," said Princeton head coach Jim Barlow. "This was the first game that we didn't hurt ourselves with a bad play to give up a goal. I'm very pleased with how the guys in the back played tonight."
Monmouth (4-2-2), ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA North Atlantic Region heading into the game, had its last chance with just less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, but Damon Wilson's drive volley was wide right of the goal. Tom Gray also had an opportunity for the Hawks in the first minute of the second OT, but his free kick from well outside the box was wide left of the goal.
The result was Princeton's first shutout since Sept. 30, 2006 and its first scoreless tie since the 2006 season opener against Stanford. Freshman goalie Sean Lynch played well but did not need to record a save thanks to the stingy Tiger defense that allowed just two first-half shots.
In addition to Lynch, freshman Brandon Busch, Tim Sedwitz, Teddy Schneider, Ben Burton and Josh Walburn also started for the Tigers.
Princeton returns to Powers Field on Sunday evening, hosting Fairleigh Dickinson at 6 p.m. in the second game of a three-game home swing.
