Tiger Tennis Teams Nationally Ranked As Spring Season Approaches
January 10, 2008 | Men's Tennis, Women's Tennis
Princeton's men's and women's tennis teams are each nationally-ranked in the first ITA computer rankings of 2008, and each squad also has individuals in the national rankings as well.
The Tiger women are ranked No. 68 in the Jan. 8 ITA poll, and sophomore Melissa Saiontz is ranked an impressive 36th in the preseason singles rankings. Saiontz is also the highest-ranked player in the Ivy League.
The Princeton men are ranked No. 71 in the men's Jan. 8 poll, and the Tiger doubles team of junior Alex Krueger-Wyman and sophomore George Carpeni is ranked as the No. 37 team in the nation in that ranking.
The ITA computer poll ranks the top 75 teams, the top 100 singles players and the top 50 doubles teams on both the men's and women's side in Division I. The next ranking is released Jan. 29.
The Tiger men had an impressive fall season, reaching the final of the ECAC Division I Team Tournament. The doubles team of Krueger-Wyman and Carpeni, who played No. 1 for the Tigers throughout the fall, won all four of its matches in that tournament, including a win over a nationally-ranked team from Penn State in the final, and also won the "A" bracket at the Farnsworth/Princeton Invitational.
Saiontz reached the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA East Regional this past fall and also won the "A" singles consolation bracket at the William & Mary Invitational.
The Princeton women begin their spring dual-match season Jan. 30 against Temple at Jadwin Gym, while the Princeton men travel to North Carolina to begin their 2008 spring season with matches against Elon, Duke and UNC Wilmington Jan. 28-31.
