Current and Former Princeton Fencers Compete in North American Cup Event

ATLANTA, Ga. -- Eight current and former Princeton fencers competed in a North American Cup event last weekend in Atlanta, Ga. Points from the event are used toward qualification for the 2008 Olympics and the Junior World Championships.
Freshman Graham Wicas placed third of 259 entrants in the senior men's epee competiton while Tommi Hurme '08 took 18th in the event. Two more Tiger freshmen placed highly among 187 competitors in the junior men's epee as Nathaniel Sulat took second and Graham Wicas was fifth. Freshman John Stogin competed in both the junior and senior men's sabre, taking 64th of 125 in the junior and 83rd of 145 in the senior.
On the women's side, freshman Caroline Merz also competed in both the junior and senior events in the sabre, taking 56th of 80 in the junior and 44th of 90 in the senior. Three alumnae competed in the other two weapons with Jacqueline Leahy '06 placing third among 122 fencers in the senior women's foil and Lindsey Campbell '02 also placing third of 138 competitors in senior women's epee. Kira Hohensee '06 took 16th in the senior epee.
Princeton's fencers will return to team competition Jan. 27 at a multi-team dual meet hosted by Drew University.
