This Week's Storylines
Back in Action
Princeton closes out its intersession schedule this weekend when it visits Yale and Brown for a pair of ECAC Hockey and Ivy League match-ups.
Last Time Out
Princeton swept Dartmouth and Harvard last weekend at home to run its win streak to three games. Princeton has outscored opponents 17-6 in the span and has returned to .500 overall at 8-8-0.
The Dartmouth Win
Princeton got goals in the first and second period from sophomore Dan Bartlett and senior Landis Stankievech to jump to a 2-0 lead after two periods. Princeton extended the lead to 3-0 when freshman Mike Kramer scored midway through the third period. Kramer, junior Lee Jubinville and sophomore Jody Pederson all had two points in the win.
Recent Success Against Dartmouth
Princeton is now 5-3-1 in its last nine games against Dartmouth and has won three-straight home games against the Big Green.
The Harvard Win
Princeton came from behind with two goals in the final eight minutes to defeat Harvard 2-1 on Saturday night. After falling behind 1-0, Princeton controlled play in the second and third periods before freshman Matt Arhontas redirected a shot to even the score at 1-1. Then sophomore Kevin Kaiser scored on a breakaway with less than three minutes left to lift Princeton to a 2-1 win.
Recent Success Against Harvard
Princeton's win over Harvard was its second in its last three games against the Crimson. The Tigers win at home over Harvard was its first since a 2-1 win in December of 2003.
ECAC Hockey Play
Princeton moved into a three-way tie with Clarkson and Harvard atop the ECAC Hockey standings with its two game sweep of Dartmouth and Harvard. Princeton has played one game less than Harvard, but two more than Clarkson. The trio has 12 points and sits a point ahead of a fourth-place tie between Quinnipiac and Yale. Cornell and Rensselaer are tied for sixth with eight points each. All 12 league teams are in action this weekend in league games.
This Weekend's Opponents
Princeton vs. Yale
Princeton and Yale meet for the second time this season on Friday night. The pair met in their season opener on Oct. 26 when Princeton won a non-league meeting by a 6-2 score. Princeton and Yale have met 225 times over the years in a series that dates back to 1901. Yale leads the all-time series 119-97-9 and holds a 59-27-3 at home. Last season Yale swept the Tigers.
Last Year's Series
Yale swept Princeton last season, winning 3-2 at Princeton and 6-3 at Yale. In the game at Hobey Baker Rink, the Yale jumped out to a 3-1 lead, then held off the Tigers. Sophomores Cam MacIntyre and Dan Bartlett scored for Princeton. In the second meeting, Yale led 4-0 and 6-1 before winning 6-3. Junior Lee Jubinville had a goal and an assist, while senior Mike Moore added a pair of helpers.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale is 7-4-3 overall and 4-2-3 in league play this season. The Bulldogs have won four of their last five and are 5-2-1 in their last eight games. Yale enters the weekend following recent wins over Nebraska-Omaha, Connecticut and Brown.
Earlier This Year
Princeton scored five goals in the second period to defeat Yale 6-2 in the season opener. Sophomore Cam MacIntyre registered a hat trick in the win and added an assist while juniors Lee Jubinville and Brett Wilson each had three assists.
Princeton vs. Brown
Princeton and Brown meet for the 141st time on Saturday in a series that Brown leads 78-55-7. Brown holds a 41-24-3 edge in the series at home. The series has been tight in recent years as the last seven meetings have either ended tied or in overtime. Princeton is 3-1-3 in the span and has won the last two, winning games two and three of last year's ECAC first-round playoff series.
Last Year's Series
Princeton went 3-1-1 against Brown last seasons. The teams tied 1-1 in the first meeting of the season, then Princeton won 3-2 in overtime at home. The pair met in the first round of the playoffs with Princeton winning the series 2-1. Brown took the opening game 4-3 in overtime, while Princeton took Game 2 2-1 in overtime. Princeton won the decisive game 4-3 in regulation.
Scouting the Bears
Brown is 1-9-4 overall and 1-4-3 in ECAC Hockey. The Bears are 0-8-2 since winning 5-2 over Colgate in early November. Brown has gone to overtime in its last two games, a tie with Army and a loss to Yale.
Individual Notes
Rhodes on Ice
Senior Landis Stankievech, a recent recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship, had a big weekend for the Tigers as he scored a goal and added three assists for four points. Stankievech had helpers on both goals in Saturday's win over Harvard and was a +4 over the weekend. He also won 14 of 25 faceoffs taken during the weekend. Stankievech is now on a three-game point scoring streak, which ties for the second longest for Princeton this season.
Defensive Contribution
Sophomore defenseman Jody Pederson assisted on three of Princeton's seven goals last weekend to double his point total to six this season. Pederson had two assists and was +5 in Friday's win and took the shot that freshman Matt Arhontas deflected to even the score on Saturday night.
Point Leader
Lee Jubinville had two assists in Friday's win over Dartmouth to lift his season point total to a team-leading 17. Jubinville also has a team-leading 12 assists.
Career Point Leader
One of Lee Jubinville's assist came on junior Brett Wilson's fifth-goal of the season. Wilson, with 14 points this season, has 58 for his career, two more than classmate Jubinville.
Line Swap
Friday's game against Dartmouth marked the first time this season that the trio of Brett Wilson, Lee Jubinville and Cam MacIntyre did not play together as a line. The move paid off as MacIntyre assisted on a goal from sophomore Dan Bartlett and Wilson and MacIntyre helped freshman Mike Kramer to his first multiple-point game of the season.
Big Time For a First Goal
Freshman Matt Arhontas scored his first collegiate goal with 7:12 remaining in Saturday's game against Harvard as he redirected a shot by sophomore Jody Pederson into the Harvard net. The goal made him the 18th player to score for Princeton this season.
Birthday Boy
Sophomore Kevin Kaiser celebrated his 21st birthday in style on Saturday night as he scored the game-winning goal with 2:36 left in regulation to lift Princeton to the 2-1 win over Harvard.
Team Notes
Balanced Effort
Princeton offense has been balanced all season as the Tigers' 44 goals have come from 18 different skaters. In addition, 21 of Princeton's 22 skaters have registered at least one point this season.
Reaching Five
Princeton's five goals scored in Friday's win was its second straight game of scoring five goals. Princeton has 17 goals in its last three games, and had three goals in the previous three games.
Above .500
After starting last season 1-6-2, the Tigers finished out the season 14-10-1. With an 8-8 record this season, the Tigers are 22-18-1 over the last 41 games.
In the Ivies
Princeton is a perfect 3-0 in Ivy League games this season, defeating Cornell, Dartmouth and Harvard. This weekend's games at Yale and Brown also will count towards the Ivy League's 10-game schedule.
Home and Away
Princeton's home record this season is 3-6, while it record away from home is 5-2.
On the Horizon
Princeton is off for 17 days following Saturday's game at Brown for final exams. Princeton returns to action on Tuesday, January 29 for its final non-league game of the season at Robert Morris, before returning to league play on Feb. 1 and 2 at Union and Rensselaer. That weekend begins a five-week race to the ECAC Hockey playoffs.
