Men's Water Polo Advances to Easterns Semifinals With 15-13 Win

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- Three late goals helped the 13th-ranked Princeton men's water polo team come from behind to defeat MIT 15-13 on Friday morning in the quarterfinal round of the 2008 Eastern Championships at Navy. Princeton will face either Brown or Johns Hopkins in the semifinals tomorrow.
Princeton and MIT battled back-and-forth all game long in the first of four quarterfinals scheduled for Friday. Princeton led by a goal after a quarter, but found itself trailing at the half. The teams traded the lead throughout the second half with MIT pulling ahead 12-11 with a five of minutes left in regulation.
Princeton evened the score at 12-12 when sophomore Jeff Cole scored on an ejection with 4:45 left. A minute later, junior Mark Zalewski scored his third goal of the game to give Princeton's the lead for the first time since a 9-8 lead late in the third period. MIT answered to even the score at 13-13, but Cole's goal with 1:44 left to put the Tigers ahead 14-13 and forty seconds later, junior Gregor Horstmeyer added an insurance goal with 1:04 left on the clock to seal the win for Princeton.
Senior Brendan Colgan led the offense with four goals in the win, while Zalewski added three. Cole, Horstmeyer and junior Eric Vreeland each scored twice and sophomore Mike Merlone made 11 saves.
The win moved the Tigers to 18-9 overall this season and allowed the Tigers to advance to the Eastern semifinals tomorrow. Princeton will play at 5:30 p.m. on Friday against the winner of the quarterfinal game between Brown and Johns Hopkins.
