Tigers Take Top 10 Matchup; Down Northeastern 5-3
November 28, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
TROY, N.Y. -- Freshmen Marc Hagel and Derrick Pallis scored their first career goals to lead the seventh-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 5-3 win over fourth-ranked Northeastern on Friday afternoon in the first game of the RPI Tournament. The game pitted the first place teams in both the ECAC and Hockey East.
Princeton jumped on top in the first few minutes of the game as the Tigers strong forecheck resulted in two goals. Hagel put the Tigers ahead 1:36 into the game when he intercepted Northeastern goaltender Brad Thiessen's clearing attempt and fired it at the Huskies' goal. The shot hit the post and bounced into the crease, but Thiessen knocked it in as he dove back towards the crease to put Princeton ahead 1-0.
Hagel followed that up with his second goal four minutes later. Senior Brett Wilson caused a turnover in the Northeastern zone and the puck went to senior Lee Jubinville behind the goal. Jubinville then fed Hagel on the doorstep and he scored on a one-timer.
Princeton took the 2-0 lead into the second period but Northeastern scored twice in the opening four minutes of the second period to draw even at 2-2. First Ryan Ginand scored on a wraparound and Chris Donovan evened the score on the power play.
The game was only tied for 1:34 before senior Brandan Kushniruk put the Tigers ahead with a power-play goal. Junior Kevin Kaiser won an offensive zone faceoff and then Kushniruk deflected junior Brad Schroeder's blast from the point to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. The Tigers regained the two-goal lead three minutes later when Pallis netted his first collegiate goal while shorthanded. Juniors Mark Magnowski and Tyler Beachell assisted on his goal.
Northeastern got back within a goal early in the third when Alex Tuckerman scored but the Tigers sealed the win when junior Dan Bartlett scored into the empty net with 53 seconds remaining.
Princeton outshot Northeastern 39-21. Thiessen made 34 saves in the loss, while Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 18 saves for the win.
Princeton is now 9-1-0 on the season and will play either Mercyhurst tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the tournament's championship game. Mercyhurst defeated Rensselaer 4-1 on Friday night to also advance to the title game.
