ECAC Opener
Princeton opens the 2008-09 ECAC Hockey season this weekend at home against Cornell and Colgate. Princeton is the defending ECAC Hockey Tournament Champion.
Friday afternoon's game will be televised live on ESPNU. Princeton has played twice on ESPNU and is 1-1 in those games, beating Dartmouth 5-2 at home last season, and losing to Dartmouth 2-1 in overtime three seasons ago. Princeton was 4-1 in televised games last season.
Princeton opened the season last Friday night with a 4-1 win at Brown in a non-conference game. Junior Mark Magnowski led the Princeton attack with two goals and an assist, while sophomore defenseman Matt Godlewski chipped in a pair of helpers. Seniors Brett Wilson and Lee Jubinville provided the other goals.
Exhibition Action
In addition to its game against Brown, Princeton also has a pair of exhibition wins under its belt this season. Princeton defeated Western Ontario 6-2 on Oct. 25 and topped the Ontario Institute of Technology 8-2 last Saturday.
Season Openers
Princeton's win on Friday moved the Tigers to 3-0-1 in their last four season openers. Princeton has begun the last four seasons with a win at Notre Dame, a tie against Bentley, a win at Yale and a win at Brown.
Player of the Week
Mark Magnowski took home ECAC Player of the Week honors for his three-point performance against Brown. The performance equaled a career high for the junior.
First Game, First Points
Sophomore Sam Sabky made his collegiate debut on Friday at Brown, and wound up on the scoresheet with assists on both of Mark Magnowski's goals.
On the Scoresheet
Sophomore Matt Godlewski recorded the first multiple-point game of his career with two assists at Brown. The performance snapped a 24-game streak without a point for the sophomore.
Welcome Home
Princeton returns to Baker Rink to play its 86th season in the building named after Princeton great Hobey Baker. Princeton was 9-7 at home last season, including wins in eight of its last nine home games. The Tigers are 458-459-60 all-time at Baker Rink.
Princeton climbed to ninth in both national polls this week following its season-opening win at Brown. The Tigers have been ranked between ninth and 12th this season. Cornell is currently ranked 17th, dropping a spot from its 16th ranking a week ago. Colgate received votes in the poll.
No. 9
Princeton is currently ranked 10th in the latest USCHO.com and USA Today polls. Princeton finished last season ranked 13th in the nation and has been ranked as high as ninth this season. The only other time Princeton has been ranked in the Top 10 came during the 1998-99 season. Princeton's highest-ever ranking is eighth.
Preseason Pick
Princeton was picked to finish first by the ECAC Coaches and Media in the league's preseason polls. Last season the Tigers were picked eighth in both polls, but finished second. Cornell was the third choice in each poll with Colgate ninth in one and 10th in the other.

Princeton vs. Cornell
Princeton and Cornell meet Friday in the 126th meeting between the Tigers and Big Red. Princeton trails the all-time series 74-43-7 and is 22-29-5 at home. Princeton is 3-2 against Cornell in the last five games of the series.
Recent History
Princeton swept Cornell last season, winning 3-2 in November in Ithaca, and 2-1 in February at home. Seniors Lee Jubinville and Brett Wilson each had a hand in four of Princeton's five goals against Cornell last season.
Scouting the Big Red
Cornell is playing in its first game of the season at Princeton. The Big Red tied the U.S. Under-18 Team and defeated Western Ontario in exhibition action.
Princeton vs. Colgate
Princeton hosts Colgate in the 90th meeting between the two schools. Colgate leads the all-time series 45-38-6 overall, while Princeton leads 22-20-4 on home ice. Princeton has taken four of the last five games from Colgate.
Recent History
Princeton topped Colgate three times last season, winning 2-0 in November in Hamilton, 7-2 in February at home, and 3-0 in the ECAC semifinals in Albany. Zane Kalemba stopped 67 of 69 shots in three wins over Colgate last season.
Scouting the Raiders
Colgate is 3-1-0 this season. The Raiders have wins over UMass-Lowell, Bentley and Robert Morris, and a non-league loss to Union.
Looking at the Schedule
Friday night will mark Princeton's first non-league game of the season, although it will be played against a league opponent. The Tigers have a similar game scheduled against Quinnipiac on Dec. 3. Princeton could also face Rensselaer in non-league play in their tournament in November. Princeton will face Northeastern, Nebraska-Omaha, Minnesota State and Robert Morris as well.
Season Openers
Princeton is 59-42-5 all-time in season-opening games. That includes a 36-21-2 record at home, a 12-12-0 record on the road and an 11-9-3 record at neutral sites. Last season Princeton defeated Yale 6-2 to open the year and is now 3-0-1 in its last four openers.
Balanced Effort
Princeton offense was balanced last season as the Tigers' 112 goals have come from 20 different skaters. In addition, 21 of Princeton's 22 skaters registered at least one point this season. Princeton also had 14 skaters with double-digit point totals.
Offense From the Back
Princeton had four defensemen with double-digit point totals last season. Princeton last accomplished that in the 1994-95 season. Princeton defensemen accounted for four assists in the Brown win.
Ranked Teams
Princeton faced eight ranked teams last season and was 2-6 in those games. Princeton fell to Clarkson 6-2 and 4-3, Rensselaer 4-3 , Notre Dame 4-2 and 7-0 and North Dakota 5-1. Princeton's wins both came over Harvard by scores of 2-1 and 4-1. Princeton's first ranked opponent this season will be No. 17 Cornell on Friday.
In The Pros
Darroll Powe '06 became the eighth Princeton hockey player to appear in the National Hockey League earlier this season. He has now played in three games with Philadelphia and joins George Parros and Jeff Halpern in NHL this season. Princeton currently has three players in the NHL, three in the AHL and three in the ECHL.
On the Horizon
Princeton visits Quinnipiac on Tuesday for a league game against its travel partner. Princeton is at Rensselaer and Union over the weekend.
