Tigers Play Tough In 6-1 Loss To No. 41 N.C. State In Women's Tennis
February 24, 2008 | Women's Tennis
Princeton's Melissa Saiontz earned another win over a top player at No. 1 singles in the Tigers' 6-1 loss to No. 41 N.C. State Sunday afternoon. The Tigers also got strong performances from Ivana King at No. 2 and Sarah Huah at No. 5.
Saiontz, who had defeated No. 3-ranked Georgia Rose of Northwestern on Saturday, this time defeated N.C. State's Daria Petrovic by scores of 6-4 and 6-1. Petrovic had been ranked as high as No. 75 earlier this season.
King won the first set against Berkeley Brock at No. 2 before Brock came from behind to win the match 6-3 in the third. At No. 5, Huah took Catherine Grotz to a tiebreak in the first set, but Grotz won the tiebreak 7-4 and then the match 6-4 in the second set.
N.C. State won all three doubles matches to take the doubles point to begin the match.
The No. 72 Tigers played three matches this weekend against teams ranked No. 41 or higher, including No. 15 Duke and second-ranked Northwestern.
Princeton (5-5) has next weekend off before playing at Rutgers March 7.
