Super Sweep Leads Women's Swimming/Diving To Win HYP On Super Sunday
February 04, 2008 | Women's Swimming and Diving
The Princeton women's swimming and diving couldn't have been much more dominant in a sweep of the annual HYP meet this weekend in New Haven, Conn. The Tigers, who are looking to break into the national Top 25, won every swimming event to defeat Harvard 210-107 and Yale 237-65.
Senior Lisa Hamming and freshman Meredith Monroe had highlight performances during one of the best regular season weekends in recent Princeton history. Monroe broke the school record to win the 200 back in 1:57.53. while Hamming followed up on a personal-best time Saturday to win the 200 breast in 2:18.39 and the 200 IM in 2:02.96.
"This was an amazing meet," head coach Susan Teeter said. "They swam out of their minds. We've trained better all season, and it's shown the way we performed this weekend. Lisa's weekend shows how gutsy she is; she is a total competitor with an undying love for the University and for the swimming team."
Junior Justina DiFazio got Princeton off on the right foot by winning the 100 free in 51.34 seconds, which barely edged Brett Shiflett's time of 51.56 seconds. Monroe barely missed an NCAA time in the 200 back, but her school record gave her a sweep of the backstroke events for the weekend.
Hamming won the 200 breast by barely beating Courtney Kilkuts, who finished in 2:18.48. Kilkuts finished just off Hamming's time in the 200 IM (2:05.91), although Kilkuts has already posted an NCAA A time in this event.
Sophomore Alicia Aemisegger won the 500 free by nearly eight full seconds with a winning time of 4:46.65. Aemisegger won three events on the weekend and set two school records in the process.
Brittney Delgado picked up an impressive win in the 100 fly (56.13), while DiFazio placed second in 56.87.
Junior Katie Giarra, who is coming off injury and placed second in the three-meter competiton Saturday night, picked up another second-place finish in the one-meter competition (271.35 points).
Princeton will celebrate Senior Night this Friday in a meet against Columbia. That will be the final women's meet at DeNunzio Pool until the 2008 Ivy League Championships (Feb. 28-March 1).
