Niagara Turns Tables on Softball, Gets 7-6 Comeback Win
March 01, 2008 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. -- A day after the Princeton softball won a one-run, extra inning game from Niagara, the Purple Eagles returned the favor Saturday morning with a 6-5, come-from-behind victory at the George Mason tournament.
In what had been a back-and-forth game through the late innings, Princeton, the designated visiting team, took a 6-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth. Niagara got one back in that at-bat and ended the game with two more runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Kelsey Quist and Beth Dalmut, who had the game-winning RBI in Friday's contest, each had two hits and Quist notched Princeton's first home run of the season. Kristen Schaus, who got the win in relief yesterday after starting the game as well, took the loss to drop to 1-1. Schaus fanned 13 batters in 6 2/3 innings Saturday after striking out nine in 6 1/3 Friday.
Niagara started the scoring by manufacturing a couple runs in the bottom of the fourth before Princeton answered in its next at-bat. Erin Miller doubled home Quist and Dalmut, who started the inning with back-to-back singles, to square the game at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth.
The Purple Eagles had back-to-back home runs in the fifth to retake a two run lead before Princeton landed its biggest blow of the afternoon in the top of the sixth. After Quist blasted a two-run home run, Miller made it four RBIs with a two-run single to give the Tigers a 6-4 lead.
An error and two passed balls helped Niagara advance what would be the game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the seventh, an inning in which the Purple Eagles got two runs on two hits.
The Tigers (1-1) will meet Quinnipiac at 1 p.m. Sunday and follow it with a game against host George Mason at 3 p.m.
