Princeton Softball Readies for Sacramento State?s Capital Classic
March 12, 2008 | Softball
PRINCETON ? The Princeton softball team will begin its run of 13 games in 10 days with five contests at the Capital Classic hosted by Sacramento State.
The tournament is part of Princeton's annual spring break trip, this year to Sacramento and Stanford.
The Capital Classic is a nine-team tournament this year, though the Tigers will miss three of those teams. Princeton's schedule includes Friday games against California and Sacramento State, Saturday games against Colorado State and Cal Poly, and a Sunday game against Oklahoma. Two of those schools, Oklahoma (2000) and California (2002) are recent Women's College World Series winners.
Nevada, Ohio State and Northern Colorado are the Capital Classic teams Princeton will not face.
Oklahoma is No. 8 in the current USA Softball poll and No. 11 in the NFCA coaches poll while California is receiving votes in both polls.
The Tigers have a history with four of its five opponents this weekend. Princeton is 0-2 against California with meetings in 2004 and 2005, 0-2 against Sacramento State after a 2006 doubleheader, 1-1 with Colorado State with both games in 2005 and 0-1 against Oklahoma after a 1987 game. Princeton will meet Cal Poly for the first time.
Princeton had a successful run last time it competed in the Capital Classic in 2006. The Tigers ran through Utah State, Minnesota, Miami (Ohio) and Southern Utah to a 4-0 record. Kristen Schaus tossed a no-hitter against the RedHawks from Miami.
Princeton's 2-5 record this year after tournaments at George Mason and North Carolina is similar to the slow start the Tigers had before lighting the fuse in Sacramento. That season, the Tigers went 2-3 at their only pre-spring break tournament, also at UNC.
Cal stands at 20-9 coming off a Tuesday game with Sacramento State (10-10). Colorado State is 13-3 and Cal Poly is 9-11 as both head into the weekend, while Oklahoma is 21-5 before a Thursday game at Fresno State.
Three Tigers have a batting average of better than .300, led by Kelsey Quist at .435 (10 for 23), Erin Miller at .375 (6 for 16) and Kathryn Welch (8 for 24) and Beth Dalmut (7 for 21) both at .333.
Kristen Schaus (1-4, 3.62) leads the Tigers in the circle. After striking out 42 batters in 22 1/3 innings at the George Mason tournament, Schaus fanned 22 in 15 innings in North Carolina. Schaus has 708 career strikeouts, second only to former teammate Erin Snyder '06 (819) in Princeton annals.
