Softball Settles for Split on Second Day in Sacramento
March 15, 2008 | Softball
SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Princeton softball team looked to be headed to a sweep Saturday before Cal Poly staged a seventh-inning comeback to win 5-4 and force the Tigers to split. Earlier Saturday, Princeton topped Colorado State, 6-4.
Princeton is 1-3 at Sacramento State's Capital Classic and 3-8 overall heading into its final game in Sacramento against Oklahoma Sunday at 9 a.m.
Princeton 6, Colorado State 4
The Tigers built a five-run lead over the first two innings and held on for a 6-4 victory over Colorado State (14-5), Princeton's first win of the spring break trip.
Jamie Lettire (1-1) had three RBIs and picked up the win in the circle, allowing nine hits and striking out four.
Five of the first six Princeton batters in the first inning reached with Lettire's run-scoring single and a two-run single for Kristin Arguedas giving the Tigers a 3-0 lead.
Princeton had six straight batters reach in the second as Kathryn Welch and Lettire had run-scoring hits for the Tiger lead to grow to 5-0.
Meanwhile, Lettire was keeping the Colorado State bats in check. The sophomore allowed three hits and two walks over the first three innings while the Rams picked up only an unearned run in that span to cut the Princeton lead to 5-1 after three.
Princeton added another run in the fourth when Kelsey Quist and Lettire had back-to-back doubles to give the Tigers a 6-1 lead.
Colorado State pulled closer with three straight two-out hits, including a home run, a double and a run-scoring single to get within 6-3 after four. Lettire silenced the Rams in the fifth and sixth before limiting a Colorado State seventh-inning comeback attempt to a single run.
"It was a better day today," said Princeton coach Trina Salcido. "Our hitters are starting to come around and Jamie Lettire and Kelsey Quist are a big power punch for us."
Cal Poly 5, Princeton 4
Princeton nearly enjoyed a comeback win over Cal Poly before the Mustangs' Stephanie Tam hit a one-out, two-run home run to give her team a 5-4 win.
The Tigers had earlier staged their own comeback, also with the help of the longball. After Cal Poly (11-13) took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, Princeton got one run back in the fourth when Jamie Lettire and Collette Abbott each had doubles.
In the fifth, Kelsey Quist cashed in a walk to Kathryn Welch with a two-run home run to tie it at 3-3 and Lettire followed with a home run to put Princeton ahead.
No Cal Poly runner got past second base in the fifth or sixth innings, but a one-out single preceeded Tam's home run in the seventh to give the Mustangs the win.
Kristen Schaus (1-7) struck out nine and gave up six hits in her 6 1/3 innings in the circle.
"Cal Poly is a great hitting team and Kris held them off balance for most of the game until the final pitch," Princeton coach Trina Salcido said.
