Matheson's Team Canada Wins Scotland Cup, Preps for Olympic Qualifying
March 17, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- Princeton senior Diana Matheson helped Team Canada to a 3-0 record in the Cyprus Cup played in Scotland during the first half of March, defeating Russia, Japan and the U.S. under-20 team.
The Canadians, with Matheson as a starting midfielder, topped Russia 2-1, Japan 3-0 and the U.S. U20 team 3-2 to win the Cyprus tournament title. Matheson did not play in a friendly against host Scotland that the Canadians dropped 2-0, but did play when Canada traveled across the English channel to tie with France, 0-0.
Following a brief time off, Team Canada will train in Southern California before heading to Juarez, Mexico for the tournament that will decide which teams get berths into the Olympic Games in China. Canada will start April 2 against Trinidad and Tobago, followed by another pool play game against Costa Rica April 6. Based on those results, Canada will hope to play in a semifinal April 9, with the two teams advancing to the April 12 final each gaining a berth into the Olympics in August.
