Women's Tennis Trips No. 55 Illinois, 4-3, In Final Match Of Puerto Rico Trip
March 19, 2008 | Women's Tennis
The Princeton women's tennis team earned its first win over a ranked opponent this season with an impressive 4-3 victory over No. 55 Illinois Wednesday morning in Puerto Rico.
In its final non-conference match of the season, Princeton (7-6) won the doubles point impressively, sweeping the doubles for only the second time this season. The Tigers then put the match away early, taking an insurmountable 4-1 lead when Sarah Hoffman beat Kristina Minor 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Hoffman's win was her seventh in singles this season, as was a win at No. 2 by Ivana King, who didn't lose a game in the second set in a nice win over Leigh Finnegan.
Freshman Taylor Marable gave Princeton a 3-1 advantage thanks to a 6-3, 6-4* win over Marisa Lambropoulos at No. 3 singles.
The Tigers earned a win in the doubles point after Hoffman and Melissa Saiontz dominated Annie McCarthy and Alejandra Meza Cuadra 8-1 at No. 3 and Marable and classmate Rebecca Parks finished off Finnegan and Megan Fudge at No. 1.
Princeton begins Ivy League play next Saturday afternoon against Penn at noon. The match will be played at the Lenz Tennis Center (weather permitting) or inside at Jadwin Gym.
