Princeton Falls in NCAA Regional to North Dakota
March 29, 2008 | Men's Ice Hockey
MADISON, Wis. -- The final score sheet said that North Dakota defeated the Princeton men's hockey team 5-1 in the first round of the NCAA Regional, but Princeton doubled the Fighting Sioux in shots and carried the play against the region's top seed for most of the afternoon. Sophomore Cam MacIntyre scored Princeton's lone goal in the game.
The two teams took a few minutes to feel things out before the game opened up midway through the period. North Dakota got its first good chances on the power play and was able to convert when Andrew Kozek scored on a wrist shot from the left circle. Jack Marto and Chary Genoway assisted on the goal.
Princeton killed off another penalty right after the goal and was then able to generate some pressure in the closing minute of the period as junior Lee Jubinville had two good chances. Princeton outshot UND 10-7 in the period, but Sioux netminder Jean-Philippe Lamoureux stopped all 10 shots and his team led 1-0 after a period.
Princeton again outshot North Dakota in second period, putting 15 shots on Lamoureux to North Dakota's five. UND scored the period's lone goal of the period at 16:18 when Ryan Duncan scored his first of three goals just three second after a power play had expired. Princeton sophomore Mark Magnowski had three great chances on the penalty kill, but UND countered to have a 2-0 lead after two.
The Sioux made it 3-0 with a second power-play tally in the third period when Duncan scored on the power play at 14:48. Duncan and Genoway then added empty net goals as Princeton pulled Kalemba looking to close in late. MacIntyre closed the scoring late in the game when he netted his 13th goal of the season with 33 seconds left to play. Junior Lee Jubinville assisted on the goal.
Lamoureux finished the night with 38 saves on 39 shots, while Kalemba stopped 13 shots. Princeton outshot North Dakota 39-18.
The loss dropped the Tigers to 22-14 overall this season. Princeton was the Ivy League and ECAC Hockey Tournament Champion and set a new school-record for wins in a season with 21.
POSTGAME QUOTES
Head Coach Guy Gadowsky
Opening statement: “I thought through the game we played well five-on-five, but now it's all done, and they're a great team.
On the decision to pull Princeton's goalkeeper early: “We were down by three, and we were here to try to win, so we did it.”
On the North Dakota's second goal: “When we were killing (Mark) Magnowski there were a couple chances and (Jean-Philippe) Lamoureux made some great saves. That was one where we just got down, and it's not going to count as a power play goal in the box sheet, but it was. It was unfortunate because they scored on the first power play, and we thought we finally had a pretty good kill, and I believe they had one pass across the box and it went to the wrong guy. I had the opportunity to see the replay, and he did a great job. He saw that Zane (Kalemba) was sort of down, and anticipated another pass across. He dropped and (Ryan) Duncan is so good; he had his head up the whole way, and was able to see that Zane dropped. I don't know that he had it in his mind to shoot right away, but he took the peak and he saw the Zane dropped and went upstairs. Like I said, the puck went to the wrong guy.”
Mike Moore on Ryan Duncan and the game he had today: “I think you have to watch out for every one of their players because they're phenomenally talented up front. Ryan Duncan is an extremely talented and gritty guy. He makes up for his size with his heart. He's a hard-working guy. We obviously were concerned about him, but no more concerned than anybody on their team because they're extremely talented.
Lee Jubinville on how the Tigers played: “I thought we played well. We generated a lot of shots on (Jean-Phillipe) Lamoureux, but those shots didn't go in. We moved the puck a lot and got down low and generated a lot of shots, but at the same time weren't able to finish.”
Mike Moore on how physical the game was: “They didn't surprise us. We were expecting them to come out physical. They're very talented. They also have some size and some speed, so we expected a great game. We were prepared to match that.”
Mike Moore on the loss: “It is disappointing. The only thing that you can take away from something like this is that you know you are leaving a locker room with a group of guys who have an incredible commitment to the program and that is something, as seniors, that you can be proud of. You want to see that camaraderie there and it's not going to leave next year and you are excited that they are going to have success in the future. That is the only feeling of satisfaction right now, but other than that, it's just very disappointing.”
Mike Moore on their lack of offense: “You never want to make excuses for anything but we just couldn't solve their goaltender and their defense. We couldn't score until the end but we knew we needed more than one goal to win.”
