Princeton Gets Six Berths in NCAA Fencing Championships
March 04, 2008 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
Princeton fencers Tommi Hurme, Graham Wicas, Clayton Flanders, John Stogin, Jasjit Bhinder and Lyuba Docheva have qualified for the NCAA fencing championships at Ohio State, Mar. 13-16.
Each of the six weapons (men's epee, foil and sabre; women's epee, foil and sabre) have 24 competitors who will compete against every other fencer in their weapon in five-touch bouts. The four competitors who win the most bouts will compete in a bracket of 15-touch bouts to decide the national champion, silver medalist, bronze medalist and fourth-place finisher.
The collective win totals of all of a school's competitors, male and female, will decide the team standings in a six-weapon format.
The Princeton contingent includes three freshmen in epeeist Wicas and sabreists Stogin and Docheva along with one sophomore (Flanders, a foilist) one junior (Bhinder, an epeeist) and one senior (Hurme, an epeeist).
Nathaniel Sulat and Edward Hurme, epeeists along with Tommi Hurme and Wicas, will be institutional alternates and will participate in the NCAA national meet only if Wicas and the elder Hurme cannot compete. A school can have only two competitors in any one weapon. Additionally, freshman Mina Zargham and sophomore Chandler Clay are national first alternates in their weapons, meaning that they will be tapped if one of the other competitors in their weapons are unable to compete.
The women's bouts will be contested on the first two days of the meet while the men's bouts will take place Saturday and Sunday.
