Kathryn Welch Named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week
April 15, 2008 | Softball
PRINCETON ? Princeton junior shortstop Kathryn Welch was selected as the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week for softball after hitting .600 during a week that included a four-game weekend sweep of league rival Columbia.
After getting three hits in a midweek doubleheader against Rutgers, Welch was especially potent against the Lions. Welch hit .750 in the series (9 for 12) with three home runs and seven RBI. The week extended Welch's hitting streak to seven games.
As a team, the Tigers clubbed 11 home runs, pushing Princeton's total to 37 on the year. That is one home run short of the program record of 38 set in 2005.
With the weekend sweep, Princeton improved to 12-0 in the Ivy League and maintained a one-game lead over Cornell in the Ivy South.
Welch's award marks the second straight week that Princeton has had an Ivy League weekly award winner. Jamie Lettire was last week's player honoree, while Kristen Schaus shared the league's weekly pitching award. Last month, Kristin Arguedas earned an Ivy League Rookie of the Week honor.
Welch, a Yardley, Pa., native, will return to the Philadelphia suburbs Thursday for a doubleheader at Villanova before taking on another Big Five team in Penn at Class of 1895 Field Saturday and Sunday.
