April 18, 2008 | Men's Soccer
The Princeton men's soccer team announced its team awards at its annual banquet April 13 at Robertson Hall at the Woodrow Wilson School.
Senior co-captain Kyle McHugh was awarded the David S. Hackett Memorial Cup, awarded annually to that member of the Princeton soccer team whose enthusiasm, discipline and leadership contributed most to the team and the sport of soccer at Princeton. McHugh was a unanimous first-team All-Ivy League pick and a third-team All-Northeast Region choice in 2007. He had a team-leading seven goals, three of which were game winners, and a team-high 15 points.
Senior co-captain Matt Kontos was honored with the Rob Myslik Award, given to the member of the men's soccer team who most demonstrates the passion for life, the fiery competitiveness, the unwavering honesty and the selfless generosity of Myslik, a former Princeton player and coach who was tragically killed in an automobile accident in 2003. Kontos was a four-year starter on defense for Princeton, playing in 65 of the team's 67 games during his career, and was an All-Ivy choice as a sophomore in 2005.
Senior defender David Metcalf was the winner of the Dr. William Trevor Trophy, awarded annually to the member of the soccer team who has shown the greatest improvement in the quality of play and attitude during the season. Metcalf, who had played sparingly during his first three seasons at Princeton, started the final 12 games for the Tigers in 2007, helping the Tigers to a 5-4-2 record in their last 11 games after an 0-6 start to the season.
Princeton opens its 2008 season at the brand-new Roberts Stadium on Fri., Sept. 5 against Lehigh.
