Dartmouth Beats Women's Lacrosse 13-12 After Late Goal Is Disallowed
April 19, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
After climbing the mountain once against Dartmouth Saturday at Class of 1952 Stadium, the Princeton women's lacrosse team looked like it had climbed it a second time. But a tactical move by the Big Green left the Tigers just short of that second comeback.
After trailing 13-9 with just more than six minutes to go in the game, Princeton appeared to have tied the game at 13 when Ashley Amo scored with 1:20 left. But Amo's stick was ruled to be illegal after the play, and, after gaining possession, the Big Green ran out the clock on a 13-12 Ivy League victory at Class of 1952 Stadium.
The Tigers (10-2, 4-2 Ivy) looked like they might be out of it when Eliza Bennett scored for Dartmouth (7-6, 3-4 Ivy) with 6:07 left to make it 13-9, but Princeton certainly wasn't. Princeton used a pair of free-position opportunities after that to make it 13-11, then took advantage of a Dartmouth foul on a draw control that led to a fast break opportunity for Christine Casaceli and a 13-12 game with 3:15 left.
Dartmouth would win the ensuing draw control after a timeout, but Princeton's Marie McKenna forced a turnover and the Tigers cleared to set up a final opportunity. On an eight-meter setup, Casaceli threw a pass across the crease to Katie Cox, who then found Amo in front for the apparent tying goal. But Dartmouth immediately called for a stick check and, after the goal was disallowed, cleared and maintained possession for the final minute.
Princeton's "almost" comeback late in the game was actually its second from a big deficit on Saturday. Dartmouth controlled draws and possession for the first 15 minutes, and, after Bennett scored with 14:44 left in the first half, had a 5-0 lead. Kat Collins, who had five goals and two assists Saturday, had two goals and an assist in that stretch.
But the Tiger comeback after that was probably more impressive. After Holly McGarvie picked up a loose ball and scored with 8:10 left in the half, finally getting Princeton on the board, the Tigers scored six more goals in the next seven minutes. Three of those goals came in a 2:30 span late in the half, including Lizzy Drumm's eight-meter goal with 1:07 left that, amazingly, made the score 7-7 at halftime.
Princeton appeared to have momentum heading into halftime, but the Big Green would take that momentum away, scoring three times in the first nine minutes of the second half. Anne Murray would score for Princeton with 21 minutes left to pull her team within 10-9, but Bennett's goal would end a three-goal run for the Big Green after that.
In all, 14 goals were scored in a 17-minute stretch beginning with McGarvie's goal with 8:10 left in the first half. Nine of those 14 goals came from the Tigers.
Princeton outshot the Big Green 30-19, including 15-7 in the second half, but were stymied in the final 30 minutes by Dartmouth goalie Julie Wadland, who had seven of her 11 saves after halftime. The Tigers did take advantage of turnovers by Wadland on the Dartmouth clear to aid in their first-half comeback; Princeton forced 13 of the Big Green's 24 turnovers.
The Tigers, playing without offensive starters Katie Lewis-Lamonica and Kristin Schwab and starting defender Marine Graham, got a balanced scoring effort, with five players scoring twice. Anne Murray also had two assists in addition to her two goals. Amo, Drumm, Casaceli and Alison Murray also scored twice.
Kristen Barry, Bennett and Cate Goydisolo added two goals for Dartmouth, whose 13 goals were a season-high for a Princeton opponent.
Princeton and Dartmouth have now played 20 times since the beginning of the 1993 season, and each team has won 10 of those games.
The Tigers have two non-conference games next week, beginning Wednesday afternoon at Temple. Game time at Geasey Field in Philadelphia is 4 p.m.
