Tigers Run Away From Temple, 15-7, To End Two-Game Skid
April 23, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
For about 140 minutes, the Princeton women's lacrosse team wasn't the same team it had been in the first 10 games of the season. But that all changed in the final 40 minutes for the Tigers Wednesday afternoon at Temple.
Trailing 2-1 late in the first half, the Tigers would go on to score 13 of the next 15 goals, including eight straight in the second half, to rout the Owls 15-7 at Geasey Field and avoid their first three-game losing streak in five seasons.
No. 6 Princeton (11-2) was still in a tight game with A-10 co-champion Temple (11-5) with 20 minutes left, leading just 6-4, but then scored eight straight goals in the next 14 minutes to force the running clock that comes with a 10-goal lead. Particularly impressive in that streak was a three-goal run in a one-minute span that turned an 8-4 lead into an 11-4 game when Kristin Morrison rolled the crease with 11:54 left.
Morrison, who came off the bench, was one of five Tigers with two or more goals in the usual balanced Princeton attack. After scoring on just one of its first 10 shots of the game, Princeton responded with 11 goals on 15 shots in the second half.
Junior Katie Cox had perhaps her best offensive game of the season with three goals and two assists, including a pair of scores in a 1:22 span late in the first half that ended her team's slow start and put the Tigers ahead for good. Christine Casaceli and Holly McGarvie combined for five second-half goals, while Lizzy Drumm had two of her three goals in the first half.
The Tigers also stepped up on the defensive end and on draws in the second half, keeping the Owls off the scoreboard for a stretch of more than 17 minutes until Hillary Richards' goal with less than four minutes left. Several of Princeton's second-half goals came directly off draw controls, particularly from sophomore Jenna Washabaugh, who had four of her team's 11 draws.
Richards led Temple with three goals and an assist, while Berkeley Summerlin had a goal and an assist but was forced to leave the game due to a second yellow card midway through the second half.
The Tigers had another 10-goal lead at 15-5 before Temple scored twice in the final 30 seconds of the game.
Princeton won its 10th straight game against Temple and its fifth straight game against the Owls at Geasey Field. The teams have now played in every season since 1991.
Temple controlled five of the eight draws and much of the possession early in the game, taking a 2-1 lead when Summerlin scored on a free-position shot with 9:19 left in the first half. But Cox's first goal, thanks to a nice pass from Drumm, tied the game three minutes later and began a three-goal Princeton run. The Tigers led 4-3 at halftime after staving off a final scoring opportunity for the Owls.
The Tigers, who outshot the Owls 29-18, including 15-8 in the second half, also got a strong game from goalie Kaitlyn Perrelle, who had five of her seven saves in the first half when Temple controlled possession.
Princeton plays its final Ivy League game Saturday afternoon at Brown (1 p.m.) before playing two non-league games against top 10 opponents next week, starting with No. 2 Maryland at Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday and finishing with No. 7 Georgetown in Washington, D.C., May 3.
