Tigers Rout Brown, 15-2, Finish Ivy Play At 5-2
April 26, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
Princeton was dominant from the opening draw Saturday afternoon at Brown, taking an 11-0 lead at halftime, a 13-0 lead early in the second half and harassing the Bears on clearing attempts throughout the game in an impressive 15-2 victory at Stevenson Field. The sixth-ranked Tigers earned a share of second place in the Ivy League with the win.
The Tigers (12-2, 5-2) were spectacular in the first half, outshooting Brown (6-9, 2-5) 23-4, getting goals from seven different players and forcing the Bears into 16 turnovers, many on clears. Princeton might have had a bigger lead if not for Brown goalie Melissa King, who had eight saves in the first half and 17 for the game.
Katie Cox had her second straight five-point game for Princeton, scoring three goals and adding two assists, including her team's first goal just 42 seconds into the game that started the Tiger run. Holly McGarvie also scored three goals, all in the first half, including a free-position goal with just less than three minutes to go that made it 11-0.
Princeton forced the running clock that comes with a 10-goal lead with 8:24 left in the first half when Jenna Washabaugh scored a free-position goal.
Eight players scored a goal for Princeton, including junior Kristin Schwab, who had missed her team's last two games due to injury but returned against the Bears with a goal and two assists in the first half. She had assists on consecutive goals from Ashley Amo and Christine Casaceli in a 29-second span early in the first half that gave Princeton a 3-0 advantage.
Cox and Sarah Steele scored for the Tigers to extend their team's lead to 13-0 before Brown's Lauren Vitkus won a draw control and scored an unassisted goal to finally put her team on the board after a 36:43 string without scoring.
The Tigers' lead was as large as 14 goals with seven minutes left after Washabaugh scored again. In addition to her two goals, both Casaceli and Amo each scored twice.
Princeton had 37 shots to Brown's 10 and scored on three of its five eight-meter opportunities. The Tiger defense contributed to 25 Brown turnovers on the day and limited the Bears to a clearing rate of less than 50%.
Princeton's two goals allowed were its fewest since last season's 16-2 win over Brown at Class of 1952 Stadium. The Tigers defeated Brown for the 17th straight season; Princeton has outscored the Bears 233-87 in those 17 victories.
Both the Tigers and Cornell, a 12-9 winner at Harvard Saturday, finished at 5-2 in Ivy play, two games behind league champion Penn.
The Tigers host No. 2 Maryland Wednesday night at Class of 1952 Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m., and Princeton's five seniors--Amo, Courtney Bird, Katie Lewis-Lamonica, Alison Murray and Norris Novak--will be recognized in a pregame ceremony on Senior Night. The game will also be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Comcast Sports.
