No. 4 Terps Run Past No. 6 Princeton, 18-9
April 30, 2008 | Women's Lacrosse
On a late April night that felt more like March, fourth-ranked Maryland played like it was ready for May.
Dana Dobbie scored four first-half goals, including three straight in seven-goal Maryland run in the first half, and the Terps led by as many as 11 goals in the second half of an 18-9 win over No. 6 Princeton in a women's lacrosse game at Class of 1952 Stadium Wednesday night.
In scoring its most goals against Princeton since 1984, Maryland (16-2) recovered from an early two-goal deficit with six goals in a seven-minute span midway through the first half, the final three by Dobbie. Then, after the Tigers (12-3) got back into the game with two goals in the first four minutes of the second half, the Terps again took control, scoring four times in less than three minutes early in the half and then pulling away after that.
"We started the game well but weren't able to respond to their runs," said Princeton head coach Chris Sailer. "Give Maryland a lot of credit. They played well after suffering a disappointing loss (to Virginia) the other day. We have to respond in the same way Saturday (at Georgetown)."
Dobbie had five goals and Kelly Kasper four for Maryland, which won in Princeton for the first time since the 2000 season. Holly McGarvie had three goals to lead Princeton, which had cut its deficit to 8-5 four minutes into the second half before the Terps scored nine of the next 10 goals.
After Dobbie scored for Maryland 40 seconds into the game, it was actually Princeton that controlled possession for much of the next 10 minutes. The Tigers then used a spurt of their own to take a 3-1 lead eight minutes into the game, getting unassisted goals from Ashley Amo and McGarvie and a spectacular fast break goal by Kristin Morrison, who rifled a low shot past Maryland goalie Allie Buote just seconds after coming out of the substitution box. Those three Princeton goals came in a span of only 1:18.
But the Terps had the answer, getting goals from Kasper and Lauren Cohen in a 19-second span to tie the game and then going ahead for good midway through the first half when Casey Magor found Cohen in front of the net. Dobbie's second goal of the game would force a Princeton timeout, but she then scored twice more after that in a 1:23 span.
Magor scored with 14 seconds left in the half to give Maryland an 8-3 halftime lead.
Christine Casaceli added two goals for Princeton, both on free-position shots, while Morrison had a goal and an assist. Freshman Erin Tochihara came off the bench in goal for Princeton midway through the first half and had five saves.
Cohen had three goals for Maryland, while Magor and Katie Princiotto each scored two. The Terps outshot Princeton 32-22, including 18-9 in the second half.
Princeton's regular-season finale at Georgetown is at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Hoyas' Multi-Sport Field. A free live audio broadcast of the game will be available at GoPrincetonTigers.com.
