Susannah Aboff Wins Ivy Individual Golf Title as Tigers Finish Third
April 20, 2008 | Women's Golf
NORTHFIELD, N.J. -- Princeton junior Susannah Aboff became the fourth Tiger women's golfer to win the Ivy League individual title Sunday, claiming the title by 11 shots at Atlantic City Country Club.
Princeton golfers have won the individual crown seven times in the 12 years of the Ivy women's golf tournament. Mary Moan won the inaugural title in 1997 while Julia Allison won twice in 1999 and 2001, and Avery Kiser won three straight from 2002-04.
Aboff, at -9 for the tournament, shot an Ivy-record 65 in Saturday's first round and finished the day with a 70. She entered Sunday's final round leading Harvard's Emily Balmert, the 2006 winner, by five shots. Aboff's 72 was good enough to finish 11 shots ahead of Balmert, whose Crimson teammates won the team title for the first time.
While Yale and Princeton combined to win the first 10 league crowns, Columbia's win ended the two-school streak last year before Harvard's inaugural title this year.
The Crimson, at +26, won by 10 shots over Columbia and 11 shots over the Tigers. Yale, Penn, Dartmouth and Brown completed the team standings.
Other than Aboff, the All-Ivy team took on a distinct Harvard/Columbia flavor as Princeton's Michelle Grilli finished just out of the running in a tie for eighth. Grilli finished at +12 with a 78, 74 and 76. Marlowe Boukis (78, 77, 78) and Kate Scarpetta (78, 75, 80) tied for 15th at +17 to complete Princeton's scoring four. Maggie Boberg tied for 21st at +23 with a 79, 77 and 83.
