Game Two Comeback Lifts Softball to Sweep of Brown, 8-0 Ivy Start
April 06, 2008 | Softball
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It took a tense late-inning comeback in game two, but the Princeton softball team swept Brown Sunday in Providence, R.I., taking all eight games against the four New England schools for just the third time in the program's 27 seasons.
With the 7-0 and 5-3 wins, Princeton improved to 8-0 on the Ivy League season and 11-17 overall. The eight-game win streak to start the league slate is Princeton's eighth in its history, the most recent time coming in 2006. All seven previous times the Tigers have started the Ivy season 8-0, it has won an Ivy title. All five times in the era in which the Ivy League has sent its champion to the NCAA tournament, an 8-0 Ivy start for the Tigers has meant an NCAA bid.
Princeton 7, Brown 0 (Game 1)
Princeton enjoyed its first shutout of the season behind a four-hit, nine-strikeous performance by Kristen Schaus in a 7-0 Tiger win in game one.
Schaus (4-11) has now fanned 774 batters in her career, moving ever closer to the Princeton record of 819 held by Schaus' former teammate Erin Snyder '06.
No Brown runner got past second base. Meanwhile, the Tigers had 10 hits and Jamie Lettire hit Princeton's 13th home run of the Ivy League season and her seventh on the campaign overall. That came in the second inning to put the Tigers ahead 1-0.
Princeton added another in the fourth on an RBI single by Kristin Arguedas and took a 3-0 lead in the fifth with a Kathryn Welch sacrifice fly.
The Tigers reserved the real outburst of offense for the sixth inning. Princeton sent 10 batters to the plate to score four runs and come close to ending the game early. Brianna Moreno laced a two-run single up the middle while Kelsey Quist also knocked in a run.
Princeton 5, Brown 3 (Game 2)
Quist provided the game-tying and go-ahead RBIs in the sixth and seventh inning to help the Tigers to a 5-3 win.
Michelle Tolfa threw the first four innings for the Tigers and started well, allowing one hit over the first three innings before running into trouble in the fourth. Two singles, a double and a ball under the glove at shortstop led to three Brown runs to give the Bears a 3-1 lead.
Princeton scored its first run in the second inning when a Beth Dalmut fly ball was dropped in centerfield, allowing Lettire to score from second.
After Brown went ahead, Princeton chipped away in its last three at-bats. Brianna Moreno had a two-out double in the fifth and scored thanks to another Brown error, and Quist's home run, Princeton's 14th this Ivy season, tied it in the sixth.
With the top of the order coming up in the seventh, Princeton took advantage of Brown's third of four errors on the game. Moreno sent a bouncer back to the circle, but the throw went awry and Moreno was on safely. The Tigers spent their next two batters moving Moreno to third, and Quist dropped a drifting fly ball into the corner in right to score Moreno and put Princeton ahead.
Lettire followed with the insurance run, scoring Quist on a single to center field.
Lettire (3-3) picked up the win in relief of Tolfa, giving up two hits in her three innings. Tolfa gave up four hits in her four innings.
The Tigers will return to competition Wednesday for a doubleheader against Rutgers at Class of 1895 Field.
