Cocoziello, Hewit, Striebel Selected In Major League Lacrosse Draft
May 28, 2008 | Men's Lacrosse
Dan Cocoziello and Alex Hewit are no longer teammates. Somewhat surprisingly, Cocoziello and Peter Striebel still are.
Cocoziello and Hewit, lacrosse teammates since they first played together in junior high school, were selected by different teams in the 2008 Major League Lacrosse draft, held Wednesday night. Following graduation from Princeton Tuesday, the two All-Americas will finally go their separate ways. Striebel, who shook off an injury-plagued career to have a breakout second half of his senior year, was also taken in the draft, by the same team as Cocoziello.
Cocoziello was selected with the third pick of the second round, the 13th overall, by the Denver Outlaws. A first-team All-America who started every game of his four years at Princeton, Cocoziello was the second defenseman picked in the draft, behind Maryland's Joe Cinofsky, a teammate of Hewit and Cocoziello on an eighth-grade New Jersey all-star team a decade ago. The Outlaws feature assistant coach Trevor Tierney, the son of Princeton head coach Bill Tierney.
Hewit was the third goalie selected, and he was taken by the New Jersey Pride with the 30th pick, two spots after Rochester made Army's Adam Fullerton the first goal taken and one spot after the Los Angeles Riptide made Notre Dame's Joey Kemp the second goalie taken. Hewit finished his career with a 7.00002 goals-against average, the third-best in Division I history. He was an honorable mention All-America this season after being a first-team All-America as a sophomore and second-team All-America as a junior.
Striebel was selected by the Outlaws as well, with the 47th pick out of 50 in the draft. The midfielder had three goals and six assists for his career for first three years and seven games before going for four goals and nine assists in last six. He is the younger brother of the Philadelphia Barrage's Matt Striebel, perhaps the best middie in Major League Lacrosse.
Paul Rabil, who scored six goals for Johns Hopkins in the NCAA title game loss to Syracuse Monday, was the No. 1 overall selection, taken by the Chicago Fire.
