September 25, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON ? After five pre-conference matches to ready themselves for the Ivy League season, the Princeton women's soccer team will take on the first of its seven conference foes Saturday night at Yale.
Princeton (3-1-1, 0-0 Ivy) at Yale (4-3-1, 0-0 Ivy)
Sat., Sept. 27 at Yale's Reese Stadium, 7 p.m.
Coaches: Princeton ? Julie Shackford (14th season/William & Mary '88); Yale ? Rudy Meredith (14th season/Southern Conn. St. '91)
All-Time Series: Princeton leads 19-9-2
Current Streak: Yale, 3
The Tigers stand at 3-1-1 following a stretch of three games in five days, ending last Tuesday, that brought Princeton two wins and a tie to rebound from its only loss of the season Sept. 7 at Hofstra.
Senior Sarah Peteraf and freshman Kalie Bartholomew scored all four goals during the recent three-game stretch. Peteraf gave Princeton its first golden-goal overtime win since 2005 when she scored in the first OT to beat Towson, while Bartholomew saved a tie at St. John's with two minutes left in regulation. Both scored within the first three minutes at Colgate in Princeton's last game, giving Princeton its first goals this season that came before the 72nd minute.
Around the Ivy: This weekend is the first set of intra-Ivy games for any of the eight teams. Cornell will start it of by visiting Columbia Friday night, while Princeton-Yale and Harvard-Penn will happen Saturday night. Brown will travel to Dartmouth for a Sunday afternoon game.
On Yale: The Bulldogs just finished a two-game trip to Northern California that started with a 4-1 loss to Stanford, No. 6 in this week's NSCAA/adidas coaches poll but finished with a 0-0 tie against Santa Clara. Senior Maggie Westfal is the team's leading scorer with five goals and five assists for 15 points. Becky Brown, a sophomore from the nearby Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., has a team-high six assists. Brown is one of two Princeton-area natives on Yale along with freshman goalkeeper Adelaide Gay, another Lawrenceville alum from Skillman, N.J.
In goal: Sophomore goalkeeper Alyssa Pont, in her first year as Princeton's starter, picked up her second shutout of the season last Friday against Towson.
The series against Yale: After the Tigers won the first nine meetings in the 1980s, the series has been all but even (10-9-2) since 1990. Yale has won the last three, including a 3-1 victory at the Tigers' temporary home of Powers Field at Princeton Stadium last season.
Looking ahead: Princeton will face another opponent from the Nutmeg State next Tuesday when it lines up against Fairfield (7-1-2) on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. With that game, the Tigers will have played every Division I opponent in Connecticut since 2004, excluding Quinnipiac, which they have never faced.
