Fairfield to Visit Women's Soccer at Roberts Stadium Tuesday Night
September 29, 2008 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON ? Their thrilling win over Yale behind them, the Princeton women's soccer team will host another strong opponent from the state of Connecticut Tuesday evening when the Tigers meet Fairfield.
Princeton (4-1-1) vs. Fairfield (7-1-2)
Tues., Sept. 30 at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, 7 p.m.
Coaches: Princeton ? Julie Shackford (14th season/William & Mary '88);
Fairfield ? Jim O'Brien (Fourth season/So. Conn. St. '92)
All-Time Series: Princeton leads 1-0
Fairfield is also coming off a game against an Ivy opponent, last playing to a 0-0 tie at home against Harvard last Tuesday. The Stags share three other common opponents with the Tigers: St. John's (Fairfield lost 1-0, Princeton tied 1-1), Colgate (Princeton won 2-0, Fairfield won 2-1) and Yale (Princeton won 1-0, Fairfield won 3-2).
One down, six to go: Princeton won its Ivy League opener Saturday night in New Haven. Lauren Whatley's corner kick in the 19th minute found its way into the goal and Princeton defended the rest of the game in a 1-0 win.
Series with Fairfield: Princeton and Fairfield have met only once before. The Stags came to Lourie-Love Field on Nov. 7, 2001 and the Tigers claimed a 4-0 win in their final non-league game of the regular season.
Popular destination: In the last five seasons, the Tigers have faced six of the seven Division I programs in the state of Connecticut. That list includes Central Connecticut State (last faced 2004), Connecticut (2007), Fairfield (2008), Hartford (2004), Sacred Heart (2007) and Yale (2008). The only Connecticut school it has not faced in that recent span is one the Tigers have never met, Quinnipiac.
Home stretch: Starting against Fairfield, Princeton will have four of its next five games at home, with a trip to American Oct. 7. Dartmouth will visit Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium Saturday before Brown visits the following Saturday, Oct. 11., and Lehigh comes in Oct. 15.
Your home for dramatic soccer: Both games so far for the Princeton women's soccer team in its new home have gone down to the end. In the opener, Lisa Chinn's goal with little more than a minute to play in regulation won it against Boston Univ., and another senior, Sarah Peteraf, scored an OT goal to beat Towson.
Princeton vs. the MAAC: Princeton's history against the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference has been entirely in the last decade. The Tigers have only met three of the 10 conference schools: Fairfield, Loyola and Rider. Princeton is a combined 7-2 against the three teams.
Final memories: Two coaches on the Fairfield staff had their final collegiate games on the Princeton campus. Laura Duncan's Central Connecticut State team fell to Princeton in the first round of the 2004 NCAA tournament, and Susan Starr was in net for Yale in last year's season finale on Powers Field at Princeton Stadium.
Another local connection: Fairfield freshman midfielder Brianna Miller is a native of Skillman, N.J., and a graduate of Montgomery High.
Dedication Saturday: This weekend will serve as the dedication of Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, the new home of Princeton soccer. Events to recognize those who made the stadium possible will take place during the men's and women's soccer doubleheader next Saturday against Dartmouth. The women's game will begin at 1 while the men's game will start at 4.
