PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton University men's soccer team opens up the 2008 season on Friday, September 5 hosting Lehigh University at 7:30 p.m. The game will be held in conjunction with the women's game at 5 p.m., versus Boston University. These will be the first games at the new state-of-the-art soccer facility, Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
The game will be webstreamed on the TigerZone for registered users. Packages are available for purchase on a monthly, semi-annual or annual subscription. Live stats will also be available free of charge. Links will be made available on the men's soccer schedule page.
The two teams last met in 2003, with the Tigers taking a 1-0 game from the Mountain Hawks. Princeton leads the all-time series 31-6-1 and has not lost a contest to Lehigh since 1999.
Princeton lost its leading scorer from last season, Kyle McHugh, but returns eight of 11 starters on the field, and both goalkeepers Joe Walter and Sean Lynch, who split playing time in 2007. There are also nine additions to the squad that finished 5-10-2 in 2007, including a 3-4 mark in the Ivy League. Brandon Busch and Teddy Schneider who finished in the top three in scoring last season will be back for their sophomore seasons. Getting things going will be junior midfielder Devin Muntz, who was selected as this year's team captain.
Lehigh enters the game on a two-game winning streak after opening up the 2008 slate at home with wins over Richmond and Stony Brook. Lehigh crushed Richmond by a score of 6-1 and followed up with a 1-0 victory over Stony Brook. Leading the Mountain Hawks offensively is senior midfielder/forward Adam Gazda who has scored three goals. Senior forward Jim Taranto has tallied one goal and added two assists for four points. Five other players have two points. Sophomore Jonathan Nydell has started both games in net and has not allowed a goal in 157 minutes but has only been tested four times.
The first 1,000 fans though the doors of Roberts Stadium will receive a free Princeton soccer commemorative ball. Providing additional entertainment will be the New York Red Bulls street team, performing freestyle soccer tricks throughout the game, and an autograph session with players at the conclusion of the game.
