Women's Soccer Ties Columbia, 0-0
October 17, 2009 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON -- The shutout streak is at four games for the Princeton women's soccer team, but for the second time in a week, all the good defense has brought the Tigers is a scoreless tie.
Princeton and Columbia played to a 0-0 tie after 110 minutes Saturday at Roberts Stadium, putting any Ivy title hopes for the Tigers in a deep deficit with time running short.
Harvard started the day with a 1-0 overtime win over Brown, moving the Crimson to 3-0 and nine points in the Ivy standings, while the Tigers now have four at 1-2-1 in league play and 5-6-3 overall. Princeton and Harvard will meet next week in Cambridge with any chance of the league crown for the Tigers on the line.
Princeton's shutout streak ran to 382:08 as goalkeeper Alyssa Pont and the Tiger defense claimed their sixth shutout of the season, all in the last eight games. But despite holding a slight shot advantage over Columbia, 13-10, it took seven Pont saves and a defensive save by Marissa Sampias to keep the game scoreless. In the 17th minute, Columbia's Marissa Schultz booted a ball that a diving Pont knocked back, only to have Schultz kick it again toward a keeper-free net. Sampias was there to kick it away, and the rebound went wide.
"Overall she did very well," Princeton head coach Julie Shackford said of Pont. "She was confident."
Columbia (6-5-3, 2-1-1) keeper Lillian Klein saved five Princeton shots as Caitlin Blosser (five) and Marci Pasenello (four) had nine of the team's 13 overall attempts.
The shutout streak passed the halfway mark of a string that ran for seven games last season over a span of 702 minutes. Of the team's 14 games this season, 10 have been decided by one goal or have ended in a tie, and three more were two-goal games.
Princeton's next game at Harvard will begin at 11 a.m. next Saturday at the Crimson's Ohiri Field. The Tigers will play their home finale the following weekend against Cornell.
