Men's Hockey Blanks Morrisville State 7-0 in Exhibition Opener
October 23, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (10/23/09) -- Seven Tigers contributed goals as the Princeton men's hockey team blanked Morrisville State 7-0 in its first competitive action of the 2009-10 season on Friday night at Hobey Baker Rink.
The line of junior Tyler Beachell and sophomores Brodie Zuk and Marc Hagel provided three goals and four assists as each of the three scored in the win.
The Tigers took 59 shots in the game, including a game-high of 21 in the opening period, but it was not until the second period that Princeton was able to crack Morrisville's goaltending with four goals in a five minute span all coming by jumping on loose pucks in and around the crease.
Senior Dan Bartlett, the Tigers' leading returning scorer put Princeton on the board at the 7:27 mark when he batted in the rebound of his own shot. A minute later freshman Eric Meland found the back of the net on the third rebound in a scrum in front. Then, just a minute after that, Hagel scored on a rebound after freshman Michael Sdao drove to the net on the power play. Sophomore Derrick Pallis scored Princeton's fourth goal three minutes later again on a rebound with assists going to junior Matt Arhontas and Meland.
The Tigers would add three more goals in the final stanza as junior Kevin Lohry, Zuk and Beachell found the back of the net. Lohry scored at the end of a 2-on-1 off a pass from classmate Mike Kramer and then both Zuk and Beachell drove home rebounds.
All three Princeton goaltenders played a period in the win with freshman Mike Condon getting the win as he stopped seven shots in the second period. Senior Zane Kalemba and junior Alan Reynolds made four saves each in the first and third periods, respectively.
The Tigers were 2 for 7 on the power play and killed off the four penalties they took.
Princeton plays another exhibition game on Sunday afternoon against Windsor at 2 p.m., before opening the season next Friday vs. Brown.
