Scanlan, Safford Earn High Finishes at Junior Fencing Meet
October 28, 2009 | Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- A pair of Princeton women's fencers posted top-15 finishes at a junior event in Montreal last Sunday, earning points toward a potential berth with the U.S. team at the Junior World Championships next spring.
Freshman Hannah Safford was the highest finisher in the women's epee among any Ivy Leaguer, tying for third overall and picking up 20 points to her credit. Sophomore Susannah Scanlan placed 14th in the epee, earning eight points.
Both Scanlan and Safford competed on a bronze medal-winning U.S. team at the last U-20 World Championships. Scanlan, a Minnesota native who finished fifth at the NCAA Championships, is a returning All-America for the Tigers while Safford, a San Francisco native, will get her first taste of collegiate competition when Princeton opens the season at the Penn State individual event next month.
