November 14, 2009 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/13/09) - The Princeton men's soccer team put on a show winning 4-0 over Yale before a national audience as the Fox Soccer Channel College Game of the Week. Sophomore Antoine Hoppenot had the game of his career, recording a hat trick in the win.
With the win the Tigers improve to 9-5-3 overall and 4-2-1 in the Ivy League. The team will learn its postseason fate on Monday, Nov. 16 when the NCAA makes it selections.
The team is undefeated in its last seven games going, 5-0-2, and honored its four seniors: Ben Harms, Danny Steiner, Nate Krinsky and Devin Muntz prior to the start of tonight's game.
With the Ivy League champion yet to be crowned and three league games remaining, Princeton still has a chance to be named Ivy League champion. If Harvard loses to Penn, and Dartmouth and Brown tie each other, then Princeton, Harvard, Brown and Dartmouth would all be recognized as league champions. Harvard would earn the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, based on tie-breaker rules of head-to-head competition.
Hoppenot tallied his first goal in the 14th minute with help from freshman Matt Sanner. Sanner delivered a perfect cross from the left side and Hoppenot shot it into the right side.
Muntz took two free kicks about two minutes apart, about 24 minutes into the game. The first was from 25 yards out and was saved by Yale goalkeeper Travis Chulick, the second was at the top of the 18-yard box and made its way past a six-man Yale wall and was caught by Chulick on the ground.
He scored his second in the 35th minute when he took the ball at midfield and ran up the field alone and blasted a shot into the back of the net past the leaping Chulick.
With just under three minutes to play, Yale's Brad Rose nearly got one past Princeton goalkeeper Sean Lynch. He shot the ball from about 20 yards out and Lynch made the save. Kevin Pope was right on the doorstep and got to the loose ball and fired a shot but junior Josh Walburn stopped the shot and kicked it out of play.
Princeton had a couple of other quality chances in the opening minutes of the second half that gave the rousing crowd at Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium even more momentum. The Tigers had a shot hit the post in the 48th minute and junior Benjamin Burton had a shot saved after a throw in was battled around in the box.
Hoppenot completed his hat trick in the 53rd minute. Chulick came off his line and was about 25 yards out which gave Sanner a chance to knock the ball into the open goal. His shot hit the cross bar and Hoppenot came running on, settled the ball and put it away.
Junior Tim Sedwitz scored his first collegiate goal and finished off the Princeton scoring in the 88th minute when he had an open chance from the top of the 18-yard box. Junior Brandon Busch was credited with the assist on the goal.
Princeton outshot Yale 17-8 in the game, while Yale had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.
Princeton goalkeeper junior Sean Lynch made two saves, and Walburn was credited with a team save. Chulick finished the night with five stops for Yale, which completes its season with a 5-9-3 record and a 2-5 mark in the Ivy League.
