Fencers to Compete in Season's First Duals Sunday at Harvard
November 27, 2009 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- The Tiger fencing teams will compete in their first dual meets of the season Sunday at Harvard, matching up against five traditional non-Ivy foes and Harvard in the all-day event.
The day will begin with a 10 a.m. match against North Carolina, followed by competition against NYU, Penn State, Vassar, Sacred Heart and Harvard. The final match of the day will not count toward the Ivy League standings, all of which will be decided on the last two Sundays in February.
Princeton opened the season last weekend at Penn State's Garret Open, an individually scored event. Of the six weapons, five saw Princeton's top finish go to a freshman. Among the standouts were epeeists Jonathan Yergler (second place) and Hannah Safford (eighth), foilist Robert Malcolm (second) and Brianna Martin (fifth), and sabreist Joanna Cichomski (fourth).
Last season, Princeton's women went 4-3 against the schools they'll face in Cambridge, defeating Vassar, North Carolina and twice NYU, and losing to Penn State and twice Harvard. The men went 7-1, defeating Sacred Heart, Vassar, North Carolina, NYU twice and Harvard twice while losing to Penn State.
Here is the complete schedule for the Tigers next Sunday:
