PRINCETON (12/10/09) - The Princeton men's hockey team travels to UMass Lowell this weekend for a pair of non-conference games prior to the holiday break. The games are Princeton's first this season against non-conference opponents.
The Tigers dropped both ends of last weekend's league series at Brown and Yale after being held to a single goal in each game. Princeton found itself playing from behind in both games, cutting 2-0 leads to 2-1 each day, but ultimately could get no closer in a 3-1 loss at Brown and a 4-1 loss at Yale.
Senior Cam MacIntyre scored Princeton's goal in the loss at Brown, while junior Sam Sabky netted his second of the season at Yale. A total of six players recorded points over the weekend, including senior Dan Bartlett's team-leading ninth point of the season, and assist on MacIntyre's goal, and freshman Eric Meland's first collegiate point, an assist on Sabky's goal.
Princeton currently sits ninth in the ECAC Hockey standings with five points due to a 2-6-1 league mark. Quinnipiac remains first in the league with 14 points despite also being swept by Yale and Brown last weekend. Cornell made up ground on the Bobcats with a three-point weekend and sits a point back in second. Colgate and Yale round out the top four, while Union and St. Lawrence are tied for fifth. At 3-0-3, Union is only team yet to suffer a loss in league play.
The Tigers are 0-3 in their all-time series with UMass Lowell. The first meeting came in the 1988 season in Orono, Maine and the teams also played in 1995 and 2000 in Princeton. These will be the first game's in the series played in Lowell.
The River Hawks currently rank ninth nationally in both polls after snapping a three-game losing streak last Saturday night with a 5-3 win over Massachusetts. UMass Lowell is currently 9-5-1 overall and 5-4-1 in Hockey East. The River Hawks started the season 8-2-1 before the three-game skid. Defenseman Nick Schaus leads the way for UML with 16 points on four goals and 12 assists. Three River Hawks, David Vallorani, Kory Falite and Paul Worthingon have seven goals. Princeton and UMass Lowell have faced two common opponents in St. Lawrence and Colgate. The River Hawks have wins over each, while Princeton fell to both teams.
