February 05, 2009 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- The Princeton fencing teams will begin the two-weekend schedule that determines the Ivy League champion this Sunday when they travel to Columbia for the first half of the Ivy round-robins.
The Ivy League has received national recognition in the sport, with the men's and women's Tigers both among the top 10 in CollegeFencing360.com's rankings. Princeton's men's team is fifth, while the women are seventh.
Princeton's men carry a 14-1 dual-meet record into the event with the only loss a 17-10 defeat to Penn State, No. 1 in the Web site's rankings, on Dec. 6. The women stand at 12-4 with all four losses to teams in CollegeFencing360's top 10, including No. 1 Penn State, No. 5 Harvard and No. 8 Temple twice.
The men will have two meets Sunday, first against Harvard at 11 a.m. and then against Penn at 2:45. The women will have the same schedule with a third meet against Cornell, which does not have men's fencing, at 4:30.
Last season, Columbia won both the men's and women's titles with Princeton placing fourth on the men's side at 2-3 and fifth on the women's side at 2-4. This year's round-robin will conclude Feb. 22 at Brown after a one-weekend break for the Junior Olympics.
