Fast Start Propels Men's Hockey Into ECAC Semifinals; Tigers Down Union 3-1
March 16, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON -- A fast start and excellent goaltending late lifted the 11th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team to a 3-1 win over Union in Sunday's third and decisive game in the ECAC Quarterfinals. With three goals in the first seven minutes the Tigers built an insurmountable lead that will send them to the ECAC Semifinals next Friday night.
Princeton came out flying and took advantage by scoring three goals in the games first 6:34. The first two goals came skating four aside and the third came shorthanded as Princeton's speed helped it build its lead.
The Tigers made it 1-0 less than a minute into the contest when senior Brett Wilson pushed home a loose puck in the crease. Senior Lee Jubinville had two chances in front with the second shot finding a hole through Union goaltender Corey Milan. The puck then laid loose in the crease with Wilson winning the race to it and shoving it over the line for his 10th goal of the season. An additional assist was credited to sophomore Taylor Fedun.
The Tigers then made it 2-0 at 2:08 when junior Dan Bartlett netted his 13th of the season and his four in as many games. He carried the puck around the net and then came in front and beat Milan on the short side. The goal was his fourth of the playoff series as he scored once in the first game and twice in the second. Junior Brad Schroeder and sophomore Mike Kramer also had assists on the goal.
Jubinville completed the Princeton scoring with his 10th of the season and second shorthanded when he converted on a breakaway at 6:34. Wilson chipped the puck away from a Union defenseman, springing Jubinville on a breakaway, which ended with the puck in the goal and a 3-0 Princeton lead.
The Tigers held Union at bay from there as Union picked up its play and outshot the Tigers through the rest of the game. Princeton outshot Union 13-1 with 12 minutes left in the first period and from that point on in the game, shots were 38-20 in Union's favor.
With Princeton's offense taken care of, the Tiger defense took over, keeping Union to the perimeter and limiting good scoring chances. The Dutchmen were able to convert on one chance when Andrew Buote shoved a rebound over the goal line at 15:41 of the second, but that was as close as they could get.
Princeton junior goaltender Zane Kalemba made 38 saves for the win, including a season high 17 in the second period. His 38 saves was one shy of a season and career high. Milan made 30 saves for Union in the loss.
Princeton's win was its 22nd of the season as the Tigers set a new program record for wins in a season and are now 22-10. It was also the third straight season that Princeton won a third game in the playoff at home to advance. All time, Princeton is 6-0 in decisive third games.
The Tigers advance to the ECAC semifinals next weekend to face Cornell at 7:30 p.m. The two teams split their regular season games with each team claiming a one-goal win on the other team's home ice. It is Princeton's second-straight trip to the ECAC Championship weekend. Yale will face St. Lawrence in the other semifinal.
