Women's Fencing Begins Competition at NCAA Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Four Tigers are past the midway point of their NCAA Championships competition at Penn State with the finals, and the team standings, to be resolved Sunday.
Two Tigers are in All-America position in the epee with freshman Susannah Scanlan standing fifth, winning 11 of 14 bouts on the first day of competition with nine more to go Sunday. Senior Jasjit Bhinder won 9 of 14 in her first day of competition.
A pair of freshmen, Lucile Jarry and Andrea Oliva, stand 18th and 24th respectively in the 25-woman field of foilists with 15 bouts down and nine to go Sunday.
The top four finishers in the weapon will fence in a bracket format for the medal spots. The team standings will be decided by the total number of wins from the men's and women's teams, of which Princeton has an eighth-best 75. Penn State, with 156 wins leads the group of 25 teams that have won a bout.
