Men's Hockey Draws Minnesota-Duluth in NCAA Tournament
March 22, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
The Princeton men's hockey team knew Saturday's 2-2 tie with St. Lawrence was enough to get them into the NCAA tournament. On Sunday, the Tigers were awarded their first at-large selection to the national tournament as a three seed in the west regional. Princeton will take on WCHA tournament champion Minnesota-Duluth in the first round next Friday night.
The appearance will be Princeton's third and its second in a row. Princeton's previous two tournament appearances came in 1998 and 2008 as Princeton gained entry into the field by winning the ECAC tournament.
Princeton will meet Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, Minn. The Tigers will play at 9 p.m. eastern time in the second game of the regional. Denver will face Miami in the day's first game. The Princeton-Minnesota-Duluth game will air live on ESPNU.
The other three Regionals will take place in Bridgeport, Conn., Manchester, N.H., and Grand Rapids, Mich. Princeton faced three other tournament teams this season in Yale, Cornell and Northeastern. Princeton went 3-3 in games against those teams, beating Northeastern, splitting two games with Yale and going 1-2 against Cornell. Cornell and Northeastern will meet in the Grand Rapids regional, while Yale faces Vermont in Bridgeport.
Princeton is making its third NCAA Tournament Appearance. Princeton dropped both games, falling at Michigan 2-1 in 1998 and to North Dakota a season ago.
Princeton and Minnesota-Duluth have met twice, with both games coming in 1980. The teams split a two-game series.
