March 22, 2009 | Men's Fencing, Women's Fencing
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Princeton's eight fencers wrapped up their competition at the NCAA Championships Sunday, taking an eighth-place team finish.
Penn State won the national title ahead of Notre Dame, Ohio State, Columbia, Harvard, St. John's, Penn and Princeton in a field of 25 teams.
Freshman Susannah Scanlan and senior Jasjit Bhinder finished in position for All-America honors in the epee at fifth and 11th, respectively, while rookie foilists Lucile Jarry placed 14th and Andrea Oliva finished 23rd.
In the men's competition, which wrapped Friday, sophomore Graham Wicas won a silver medal in the epee, while freshman foilist Alexander Mills was 12th, sophomore epeeist Mike Elfassy was 13th and sophomore John Stogin finished 19th in sabre. Wicas and Mills each won All-America honors, making it the first time since 2006 that four Tigers have won All-America awards.
Both the men's and women's epee were particularly strong, each finishing second on the team standings. Princeton's 29 men's epee wins were second to Wayne State with 31, and the Princeton women's epeeists won 30 bouts, second to Notre Dame's 38.
The eighth-place finish is Princeton's best since 2006, when it also finished eighth. The Tigers took 10th at the NCAAs in each of the last two seasons.
