Softball Tigers Split First Ivy Doubleheader with Yale
March 28, 2009 | Softball
PRINCETON -- Two late hits through the wickets at shortstop decided Princeton's Ivy-opening softball doubleheader against Yale Saturday afternoon, ending in a split for the Tigers.
Yale took the first game 3-2 with Princeton winning 3-2 in the nightcap. The opener win was Yale's first over Princeton since 2004, breaking a nine-game Tiger winning streak.
Three of the four Ivy League doubleheaders split Saturday, with Cornell sweeping Brown to claim the early Ivy South lead. Princeton (6-10, 1-1 Ivy), Columbia and Cornell are all 1-1 in the division with 18 games left.
Yale (10-12, 1-1) came from behind in both games but never led in the day's second contest.
RBIs from Kathryn Welch and Erin Miller helped stake Princeton to a 2-0 lead after three innings in game two, but the Bulldogs cobbled together the tying runs on a two-run single by Virginia Waldrop in the fourth.
Princeton wasted little time scoring the game-winning run in the seventh. Freshman Nicole Ontiveros used her speed to leg out a slapped single at shortstop, just before fellow rookie Kelsey VandeBergh benefitted from a dropped fly ball along the left-field line in the swirling winds. That set the stage for Welch, who snaked a hit through the legs of her counterpart at shortstop, allowing Ontiveros to score the clincher.
Jamie Lettire (2-3) got the win in the circle in game two, striking out six with a walk and five hits.
In the first game, it was Welch who was victimized at shortstop for the go-ahead run, when a sixth-inning ball off the bat of Yale's Meg Johnson slid through under Welch's glove. That scored Lauren Huddleston, who herself had reached on a dropped comebacker to Michelle Tolfa in the circle.
Princeton took the lead in the first inning of game one when Kelsey Quist hit her third home run of the season, a two-run shot that was the only ball to leave Class of 1895 Field Saturday.
Yale got the runs back in the third on back-to-back hits and a sacrifice fly off of Tolfa (4-6) who gave up four hits and two walks while striking out three.
Princeton is scheduled to play Brown Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at '95 Field, weather permitting.
