Kalemba Named Ivy League Player of the Year
March 05, 2009 | Men's Ice Hockey
Junior goaltender Zane Kalemba was named the Ivy League Player of the Year, becoming the second straight Tiger to claim the award. He was also named a first-team All-Ivy and was one of three Princeton players to be honored by the league.
Kalemba was named the Player of the Year in a vote by League head coaches. He backstopped Princeton to a program-high 20 regular season wins and a third-place ECAC finish. Kalemba closed the regular season with a nation's best 1.61 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage. Kalemba recorded all 20 wins for the Tigers, setting a program record fro wins in a season, and had two shutouts.
Kalemba becomes Princeton's third Ivy League Player of the Year in men's hockey and second in a row. Current senior Lee Jubinville was the league's Player of the Year last year, while John Messuri took home top honors in 1989.
Along with Kalemba, junior defenseman Jody Pederson was also named to the first-team. Pederson has five goals and 14 assists on the season for 19 points. He currently is tied for second on the Tigers in points and his 14 assists are tied for the lead. Pederson was second in Ivy League scoring among defenders and sixth in ECAC defenseman scoring..
Kalemba is Princeton's first first-team goaltender since Eric Leroux in 2005-06 and just the third Tiger goalie to receive first-team honors. Ron Dennis also was a first-team goalie in 1981. Pederson's selection gives Princeton first-team defensemen for two straight seasons, as Mike Moore was a first-team choice last season. The pair become the 17th and 18th Princetonians to receive first-team All-Ivy honors.
Senior forward Brett Wilson was named to the league's second-team. Wilson, a second-team selection last year as well, is Princeton's leading scorer with 23 points on nine goals and 14 assists. The senior recently reached the 100-point mark for his collegiate career.
Princeton returns to action March 13-15 when it hosts a best-of-three ECAC Hockey Quarterfinal series at Hobey Baker Rink. Its opponent will be determined following this weekend's ECAC first round series'. For ticket information call (609) 258-4TIX or click here.
