Susannah Scanlan Competes Against World's Top Junior Fencers
April 20, 2009 | Women's Fencing
PRINCETON -- Princeton freshman epeeist Susannah Scanlan, an All-America and first-team All-Ivy honoree, helped Team USA to a third-place finish at the Junior World Championships earlier this month in Belfast, Ireland.
Scanlan, who placed fifth in her weapon at the NCAA Championships in March, also advanced to the Round of 16 in the individual competition before falling to the eventual champion, Yujie Sun of China. Scanlan was one of only two Americans to advance to the Round of 16 in the individual event.
Scanlan was seeded 51st of 74 competitors before posting back-to-back upsets of fencers from China and Slovakia. Of the 22 national teams, the U.S. was seeded sixth and defeated Canada in the Round of 16, upset third-seeded Ukraine in the quarterfinals, fell to second-seeded Russia in the semifinals and defeated Hungary in the third-place match to win the bronze.
