Women's Tennis Takes Top Spot Among Ivies in Weekly ITA Rankings
April 21, 2009 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- After cliniching the program's eighth Ivy League title, the Princeton women's tennis team has secured the top spot among Ivy League teams in this week's ITA national Division I rankings, released Tuesday.
Princeton (18-7, 6-1 Ivy) checks in at No. 44 this week, and the level of competition in the Ivy is apparent from three other league schools getting spots in the ITA's top 75. Yale is at No. 51, Brown is at No. 60 and Harvard is No. 64.
The ranking is up two spots from last week. Princeton has been in the top 75 the entire spring season with a high of 39 in the Mar. 17 poll. The lowest Princeton has been ranked at any point was 62nd in the Jan. 29 poll. Yale had been the top Ivy in the last two weekly rankings, but the Tigers supplanted the Bulldogs following Yale's loss to Harvard Sunday and Princeton's win over Columbia.
The Tigers also have entrants in the now-weekly singles and doubles rankings. Freshman Lauren McHale ranks 118th of the 125 players the ITA ranks, and only one other Ivy player, Beier Ko of Harvard at No. 89, is on the list.
Sophomore Taylor Marable and freshman Hilary Bartlett are ranked No. 45 of 90 doubles teams and are the highest-ranking Ivy duo of only two on the list. Brown's Bianca Aboubakare and Casey Herzberg are at No. 76.
Princeton has a relatively long layoff between its final Ivy match, last Sunday, April 19, and its NCAA first-round match, which will occur May 8 or 9. The draw will be announced April 28 at 5:20 p.m. on ESPNEWS.
