Golf Teams to Compete for Ivy Title This Weekend

PRINCETON -- In what has historically been a successful event for the Princeton golf programs, the Ivy League Championship will once again host the Tiger men's and women's teams along with every other Ivy golf program this weekend at Atlantic City Country Club in Northfield, N.J. One round will be played each day Friday through Sunday.
Princeton's men's team has won 19 of the 34 championships contested since the league formed its own tournament in 1975. The most recent was in 2006, capping a string of three straight and six since 2000.
The history is much shorter for the women at the Ivy tournament, but no less successful. This weekend will be the 13th Ivy women's championship, and Princeton will be searching for its fifth title. The others came in 1999, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
Susannah Aboff will be back to defend her Ivy League individual title from a season ago, when she became the first Tiger since Avery Kiser '05 to win medalist honors at the league event. Though the honor made Aboff the de facto "Player of the Year" in the Ivy League, a rule change decided by the coaches will now put that honor up to a vote. The winner of the official new Ivy League Player of the Year honor will also be announced at the close of the tournament.
The women's team has put together a resume this season that suggests another Ivy title could be in store. This season, between the fall and spring, Princeton has a 14-1 record against Ivy League teams in other tournaments. Harvard was the only team to beat Princeton so far in 2008-09, edging the Tigers by two shots at Princeton's home invitational during the fall. Princeton, however, has had the most recent success in the series, defeating Harvard by six shots at the Columbia Roar-EE Invitational last weekend to win the tournament.
