May 01, 2009 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Lauren McHale has been named the Ivy League Rookie of the Year for women's tennis as one of five Ivy League champion Tigers to receive All-Ivy honors, the league announced Friday.
McHale is Princeton's third Ivy League Rookie of the Year since the award began in 1995, joining Kavitha Krishnamurthy (2000) and Neha Uberoi (2003).
McHale and fellow rookie Hilary Bartlett were named to the first-team All-Ivy, giving Princeton two first-team honorees for the second time in three years.
Playing Princeton's No. 1 singles position in all but two matches her entire rookie season while holding down a spot in the ITA top 125 most of the way, McHale was 23-12 overall, 16-7 in dual matches and 5-2 in the Ivy League. Bartlett, also a freshman, was most often Princeton's No. 2 singles player going 22-10 overall, 18-5 in dual meets and a perfect 7-0 in Ivy matches. Both rookies were unanimous selections.
Barlett and sophomore Taylor Marable were a unanimous first-team All-Ivy selection in doubles and have earned a place in the NCAA doubles tournament later this month. The duo finished 23-10 overall, 13-6 in duals and 5-2 in the Ivy as Princeton's top doubles pair.
Melissa Saiontz and Rachel Saiontz, a junior and freshman respectively, were both named to the second-team All-Ivy. It is the third straight all-league honor for the older Saiontz sister, who was a first-team selection in 2007 and second-team in 2008. Melissa Saiontz was 18-12 overall, 12-7 in duals and 6-1 in the Ivy, usually playing the No. 3 singles spot. Rachel Saiontz split most of her singles time between the fourth and fifth positions, going 20-7 overall in her rookie season, 15-3 in duals and 6-1 in Ivy play.
Marable was an honorable mention selection in singles, finishing 17-12 overall, 13-7 in duals and 6-1 in Ivies. She was a second-team singles and honorable mention doubles section last season.
McHale and Rachel Saiontz were an honorable mention doubles pair, most often playing Princeton's No. 2 doubles spot. The pair finished 16-5 overall, 10-3 in duals and 4-1 in Ivies.
Princeton will play next in the NCAA tournament against Florida International on May 8 at the University of Miami.
