Lauren McHale Named ITA Regional Rookie of the Year
May 15, 2009 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- After serving as Princeton's top singles player in a season in which it returned to the NCAA tournament, Lauren McHale was named the ITA's East Region Rookie of the Year.
McHale was one of eight regional honorees nationwide for the award, finishing 23-13 in singles matches between tournaments and dual matches over the 2008-09 season. In dual meets, McHale was 16-8 including 15-7 at the No. 1 spot and 5-2 in the Ivy League. In doubles, McHale most often played with fellow rookie Rachel Saiontz in the No. 2 spot, going 10-3 in that position.
Among the eight winners, McHale was one of just two from schools outside the "big six" conferences, standing alongside winners from Duke, Georgia, Iowa, Nebraska, Southern Methodist, California and Arizona.
Princeton won its first Ivy League title since 2000 and made its third all-time NCAA appearance, drawing the third seed in the four-team Miami (Fla.) Regional where it dropped a 4-3 decision to Florida International on May 8.
