Marable, Bartlett to Face Mississippi Duo in NCAA Women's Tennis Doubles Tournament First Round
May 19, 2009 | Women's Tennis
PRINCETON -- Sophomore Taylor Marable and freshman Hilary Barlett will face a pair from Mississippi in Thursday's first round of the NCAA women's doubles tennis tournament at Texas A&M, the NCAA announced Tuesday.
The Princeton duo will face Mississippi's Karen Nijssen, a Dutch sophomore, and freshman Mississippi native Kristi Boxx Thursday at 5 p.m. ET. Match times will be announced after Wednesday's NCAA singles first round is completed since some of those involved in the doubles tourney are also playing singles. Boxx is one of those and will be playing Wednesday morning in the singles field.
There are 32 doubles teams in the NCAA bracket. Of those just six pairs come from outside the "big six" conferences, with two coming from the WAC (both from Fresno State), one from Conference USA (SMU), one from the Mountain West (TCU) and one from the Colonial (Old Dominion). Both the winner and the runner-up will have played one match each day between Thursday and Monday, May 25.
Marable and Bartlett have just one common opponent with Nijssen and Boxx between the spring and fall seasons. The Princeton pair lost a tight match to Vanderbilt's Heather Steinbauer and Jackie Wu, 8-7, on Mar. 18. Less than a month later on Apr. 5, Nijssen and Boxx lost to the Vandy duo 8-6.
Bartlett and Marable were named a first-team All-Ivy League doubles team, and while the SEC does not have all-league doubles teams, both Nijssen and Boxx were recognized otherwise. Boxx was a first-team All-SEC player and a freshman all-league team member, while Nijssen was a second-team All-SEC honoree.
