Kovler Named First-Team All-America; Seven Tigers Honored
May 21, 2009 | Men's Lacrosse
One is perhaps the greatest goalie in college lacrosse history. One is among the 10 best offensive players in college lacrosse this decade. The third is Mark Kovler.
The fourth and fifth may be arriving in three years.
Kovler was named a USILA first-team All-America today, making him the third Princeton player ever to be named All-America all four years. Kovler joins goalie Scott Bacigalupo '94 and attackman Ryan Boyle '04, two of the greatest players in program history, as four-time Princeton All-Americas.
In all, seven Princeton
players were named All-Americas, including two freshmen who began down the path
to try to match Kovler, Boyle and Bacigalupo.
Defenseman Chad Wiedmaier, one of those freshman, was named a second-team All-America, as was sophomore attackman Jack McBride. Senior defenseman Chris Peyser was a third-team selection, while freshman goalie Tyler Fiorito, senior attackman Tommy Davis and senior midfielder Rich Sgalardi were all honorable mention picks.
Kovler scored 34 goals this season, the second-highest single-season total by a Princeton midfielder behind the 36 scored by Josh Sims in 2000. Kovler finishes his career with 91 career goals, third all-time by Princeton middies behind Sims (103) and Lorne Smith '99 (94).
Kovler started his season slowly, with six goals in the first five games, but he would finish with 28 in the final 10. Along the way, he would score at least three goals five times, including a career-high five in the first round of the NCAA tournament against UMass.
Wiedmaier replaced first-team All-America Dan Cocoziello on defense and started every game his freshman year. Wiedmaier became the first defenseman in school history to be a first-team All-Ivy League selection, and he led the team with 22 caused turnovers.
McBride went from being the Ivy Rookie of the Year as a freshman to first-team All-Ivy League honors as a sophomore. His 35 goals led the team, and he scored at least one goal in 13 of the 14 games he played. He also led the team in goals scored eight times.
Peyser started every game the last three years and was third on the team with 17 caused turnovers. He earned All-America honors for the second time in his career after being an honorable mention selection in 2007, and he was also a three-time All-Ivy pick.
Davis finished his career with 134 career points, 16th-best all-time at Princeton. He is also one of only seven players in school history to have at least 75 career goals and 50 career assists. He led the team in scoring with 44 points (27G, 17A), making this the second straight time he has led the team in points scored.
Fiorito joined Bacigalupo as the only Princeton goalies ever to start every game of their freshmen years. Fiorito finished in the Top 10 in Division I in goals-against average (7.40) and save percentage (.587) and was a second-team All-Ivy selection.
Sgalardi went from having 18 points his first three years combined to having 42 his senior year. His 24 assists led Princeton, and he finished along with Kovler among nine Division I midfielders with at least 40 points this season.
