Aboff Begins NCAA Competition Thursday in Florida
May 06, 2009 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Susannah Aboff, who was selected for NCAA golf competition in her final chance as a senior, will begin the NCAA East Regional in Gainesville, Fla. Thursday morning.
Aboff is the winner of back-to-back Ivy League individual championships but was overlooked for inclusion in the NCAA field as an individual last year. The Tigers have come up short as a team at the Ivy League tournament the last four seasons, leaving an individual selection in her senior season as a last shot for Aboff to compete in the NCAA championships.
After getting the nod, Aboff will join a list of Princeton golfers to compete individually at the NCAA regional, including Mary Moan (1995, 1996,1997), Laura Gilmore (1995) and Avery Kiser (2002, 2003). Princeton golfers last competed in an NCAA regional in 2005, the last of the team's three Ivy titles (2001, 2004) since the Ivy began its own tournament in 1997.
Aboff had the opportunity to play a practice round Wednesday at the Bostick Golf Course, which measures 6,023 yards for the event and is a par-70. She will be competing with 107 other golfers for essentially 42 spots, as the top eight teams, plus the top two individual scorers (not necessarily those who entered as individuals) will advance to the NCAA Championship two weekends later in Maryland.
Three of Aboff's four tee times, counting the practice round, are the earliest calls of the day. She and Missouri junior Julia Potter and Maryland freshman Jessica Hollandsworth teed off for their practice rounds at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday and will hit the course again at 7:30 a.m. Thursday for the first round off the 10th tee. Friday will bring an 11:40 a.m. tee time from the first tee before heading back to the 10th at 7:30 a.m. Saturday.
